    Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping

Xi Jinping's predecessor Hu Jintao ushered off stage in the final session of the Chinese Communist Party Congress

lots of speculation - is he ill , is it a public humiliation, a repudiation of his policy of re-opening of mail, trade, and direct air links between Taiwan and the PRC ?

Xi gets an unprecdented third term. did Hu say something?

Hong Kong tech stocks down big time, it seems investors are getting out of China.

Most chips made in Taiwan, which is the real reason China's sabre rattling about Taiwan is spooking the west. Oh yeah and freedom and democracy, of course.

Unfortunately for the US, the likes of Intel ruined themselves in the past decade trying to create shareholder value a la Boeing.

Apple starting to put iPhones together in India now though.

Europe should get its shit together. The chip fabricating machines, which are used all over the world, are all built in in Eindhoven by ASML. Siltronic in Germany is a major manufacturer of the silicon wafers that are loaded into the machines to print the chips on. So I don't see we can't just make the damn chips in Europe as well.

I've been getting an ad for asml at least twice a day on YouTube for about six months. Why are they advertising to me?

This could be interesting in China. Public protests in China are not as rare as you might think, I saw quite a few in Chongqing. Large crowds can form very quickly in cities given the population density and a cultural tendency to gravitate towards anything that looks vaguely interesting. Protests have tended to be over local issues, like a corrupt housing developer or a disliked local police officer, whereas protests against central government were much rarer, at least until recently, and much more quickly stamped out.

I think China is in quite a dangerous, turbulent time. Most people were happy to ignore the totalitarianism as long as their personal wealth increased and their private family lives were not interfered with too much. Covid has destabilised both of those. The economy is stalling, the property market is precarious, and people are extremely weary of the lockdown restrictions from the last three years, which have prevented them from spending time with family (which is often very limited time anyway due to many people working away over long distances and only being able to travel home once a year for the Chinese New Year holiday).

It's a tinderbox and it won't take much to light it.

I was hoping that you would certainly mnent and very much appreciate your insight.

A striking element of this weekend's protests is that they are happening at elite institutions. Not just Tsinghua, but Beijing as well, and this from Nanjingl

I just hope that China doesn't try and distract things by invading Taiwan.

Hasn't the zero covid policy stopped being anything or very little to do with covid for quite some time now?

See the above thread. Abysmal vaccine rates for the elderly (and the not great Chinese vaccine) leaves the healthcare system fucked if there's a surge.
