    Monkeypox: the next pandemic?

The WHO has declared its highest alert level for the monkey pox outbreak. The only other issues this level is currently applied to is the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing efforts to eliminate polio: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-62279436

More than 16,000 cases have been reported across 75 countries, with five reported deaths.

Probably not as I think Monkey Pox only spreads through sexual contact.

      From this article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-45665821

"Monkeypox can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person. The virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth.
It has not previously been described as a sexually transmitted infection, but it can be passed on by close contact.

It can also be spread by contact with infected animals such as monkeys, rats and squirrels, or by virus-contaminated objects, such as bedding and clothing."

So it's not as contagious as an airborne respiratory virus like Covid-19, but it's not strictly speaking an STD as there are other ways to catch it too.

Kids are starting to get it now as well, and I'd imagine would be quite useful vectors for the virus. As Balders says, this is in no way an STD.

The majority of cases in Africa are in children under 15

I would be much more terrified of that than Monkeypox. It's a proper WTF thing that polio might be circulating anywhere in the developed world.

Are Orange and Rockland Counties where regularly anti-vaxxy communities live? I know New Rochelle was a ground-zero in Covid, but that's in Westchester I think.

The heart of the problem (but not by any means the exclusive cause) n Rockland and Orange are Haredi communities with anti-vax rebbes.

Which of course adds another very serious complication to the public health challenge

                      This provides some background

When the first returns of polio in London happened, I'm sure that I pointed out that it's exactly what the Brexiters wanted: back to the fifties.
