South African mass poisoning

It's all very bizarre. First reports on social media claimed a police shooting, then a stampede, now some kind of poisoning.

My initial thought on hearing this was CO poisoning. But that wouldn't be unexplained for long as it leaves telltale signs on bodies (as would shooting and a stampede of course...). And CO poisoning surely isn't quick enough to kill everyone with no-one escaping to raise the alarm/bear witness to what happened. The lack of any survivors to explain is the bizarrest aspect.
