Agave syrup seems to be a popular sweetener for people with sugar issues. My stepson uses it as sugar makes him super-hyper.

You might be relieved to find out that that, despite lots of studies on the subject, none of them have been able to show a direct link between sugar and hyperactivity in kids. At least not most kids.
Large amounts of sugar can contribute to inflammation, among other things, so that could be something. And some people can't digest it very well.

My parents kept bees when I was a kid (my Dad watched The Good Life and thought it was a "how to live your life" documentary). You could definitely taste the difference between the years when the local farm were growing rape and when they were growing beans.

Re the original point. the UK VAT rate on all human food sold unheated for take away is zero unless it fall within certain long-standing exceptions (confectionery, potato-based snacks etc). There's no reason why a food should attract VAT just because it's expensive.
