    Pronunciation survey

At my wife's request, I am asking the OTF posse for views on whether "syringe" is pronounced as two syllables ("si-ringe"), or as one ("sringe").

As you might guess, our respective pronunciations differ on this point.

I'd say the first syllable (of two) is a schwa, rather than a short i

How can you differ on the pronounceiation of something that's demonsterabelly a two syllable word?

ad hoc, Yes to the sound (if there is such a syllable, wouldn't want to beg the question) but I don't believe OTF's software enables me to post a schwa symbol.

Two syllables, obviously (first one shorter than the second, obviously).

                          Suh-rindge

My missus reckons I'm the only person in the world that says sammwich. I maintain it's commonplace.

Similarly, I occasionally lapse into pronouncing candles as "cangles" .

Two syllables for "syringe" and another "samwidge" mumbler, from me.

                                  That's how I'd say it.

I think (although I can’t be 100% sure because nobody’s ever checked me on it) that I say the full gamut of sandwich pronunciations. Sand-witch, Sand-widj, Sam-witch (least common), Sam-widj.

                                      A two-syllable syringe for me.

As for sandwich, I vary between 'sand' and 'samm', but it's always 'widge' rather than 'witch'.

Here are the results from the Thames Estuary [Ess-tree] jury:

                                        Suh-ringe (very short suh sound)

                                        Sann-widge.

OK, there's a clear trend emerging of a near total consensus for two syllables. My wife will feel wonderfully vindicated. Just think of all the great things DR and I can achieve in the time you're all wasting saying that unnecessary second syllable.

The missus is currently getting stressed about going for her booster this afternoon, as she's a bit phobic (not of needles, but of medication). My glorious daughter just said to her "You're just worried that the nurse will say 'sringe" and show you up!"

Some years ago the Guardian ran a story from Syringa Street in my old hood in Belfast. I had to grumble to our resident sub-editor that they carelessly spelt it syringe throughout

                                              One syllable for syringe personally.

                                              And sandwich is pronounced "buh-ee".
