The way in which German Turks are considered "foreign" in both countries is not uncommon among diasporas of that kind.. I've heard similar things from Poles in the UK or Portuguese in France, for instance.
But when I did the Pride Week kickoff presentation, I caveated my intro that I'd be using 'gay' as a blanket term for the sake of keeping things intelligible.
