The amazing thing about Florida, to me, is that it somehow remains a sort-of-swing-state despite having that many Floridians in it. Given all the stories that come out of the state you'd expect it to be more Republican than Alabama.

Turnout has a lot to do with that.

77 percent in 2020, 52 percent when DeSantis won in 2018 (and that was notably high for a non-presidential year)

Actually, which states traditionally attract the biggest election turnouts?

Wasn't it 2018 when they approved the measure to allow ex-felons to vote again? If so, it is a pretty progressive move when you are electing DeSantis at the same fucking time.

Minnesota is the traditional "leader", but the data varies by election and there is a significant nationwide drop in turnout from Presidential elections (every four years) to "Midterm" Congressional elections (other even numbered years) to "off year" elections when only state and local races are on the ballot.

There is a sortable table here that shows turnout by state for federal elections from 2002-2018

Yes it was and yes it is

It is a very weird state politically (and in just about every other way)

                Interesting.

I would have expected New York to be higher.

Uncompetitive states generally have lower turnouts. Urban areas often have lower turnouts. And New York also has some structural issues I think - ursus will know more - that mean it has chosen to stay pretty dark-ages in terms of voter access and ease.

                    All true

New York may well be in the bottom half in terms of "voter access" (same day registration and "no excuse" absentee ballots) were both rejected in referenda last month) and the local Departments of Election are renowned for their patronage and incompetence.

Well If you know that you're one bottle of cough medicine away from riding a lawnmower through the window of an off licence in the nude, and holding it up with your pet alligator, you're going to want to make life easier for people with convictions.

That was in fact the key factor in the measure passing

                          Florida:

                          https://floridapolitics.com/archives...rage-incident/

John Kuczwanski, the Legislative Affairs Director for the State Board of Administration, was killed in a shootout triggered by a road rage incident in north Tallahassee.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office took one person into custody after the Jan. 6 incident, however that person has since been released and no charges have been filed, according to a LCSO news release.
                          ...
The sources said the incident began after Kuczwanski’s BMW drifted out of its lane while heading north on Thomasville Road. That’s when the BMW hit a white Prius.

Both cars pulled into a parking lot. The driver of the Prius confronted Kuczwanski about hitting him, the sources said. The Prius’ driver then returned to his car to wait for law enforcement’s arrival after confronting Kuczwanski. That is when, according to Florida Politics’ sources, Kuczwanski rammed his BMW into the Prius on the driver’s door, and began pushing the car sideways in the parking lot.

Kuczwanski then shot a gun at the white Prius, according to the sources. The Prius driver drew a gun and fired back into the windshield of Kuczwanski’s BMW. Kuczwanski was hit and killed, according to the sources.

The driver of the Prius then exited their vehicle on the passenger side and took cover not knowing if Kuczwanski was about to fire back.

However, Kuczwanski’s wife, Rebekah Kuczwanski, said in a Twitter thread that her husband was a victim while confirming he lost his life. She claimed that he was trapped and “assassinated” and was trying to escape the person shooting at him.
                          ...
Previously, Kuczwanski pleaded no contest to assault and disorderly conduct charges in 2014 related to a separate road rage incident at the same intersection, as first reported by Tallahassee Reports.

According to the probable cause affidavit for that case, deputies were dispatched after a driver called to report that another driver had “pointed a small, black in color handgun with a mounted laser at him while stopped next to him at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Bannerman Road.”

Law enforcement found Kuczwanski still inside the vehicle matching the description from the caller when they responded to that 2014 incident. A deputy verified that Kuczwanski had a weapon matching the caller’s description and arrested him on the scene. He was later sentenced to probation, which was completed in 2018.

Kuczwanski, 52, graduated from Florida State University in 1992 with a degree in political science. His career in Tallahassee included working as former Sen. Debby Sanderson’s chief of staff, communications director of the Department of Management Services, and more than 11 years with the State Board of Administration.

The final tweet on his Twitter account, an announcement that he had entered an online raffle for a firearm worth $5,000, was posted on Dec. 9, 2021.

My wife saw DeSantis riding by yesterday on his way to a photo-opportunity, where he was predictably maskless (but already triple-jabbed I'd imagine).

A private local university meanwhile sent out a celebratory email yesterday after the SCOTUS ruling, which means it can continue having non-vaxxed employees and fuck the health of the vaxxed ones.

OK, not quite Jesus gunning down a baby, but the closest image I could quickly find.

Yes, I immediately thought JESUS GUNS BABIES makes for quite the arresting mental image, doesn't it?

Apart from all the obvious things, one thing I find offensive about that bus is that the stars used as (appropriately) bullet points don't seem to line up straight.

What I'm getting from that, is that Kandiss Taylor is anti-Christian, and is prepared to stoop to sensationalist slogans to persuade other people to ditch Christianity.

They should sabotage all the Republican primaries now they’re allowed to vote in them.
