Sanchez's last pre-election act was to order the exhaustion of Franco.

Shouldn't be too difficult. He's getting on a bit now.

Long running story this one more for its symbolism than practicalities. But one which shows up the fachas for what they are.

It isn’t as if they are hiding, of course.

I would expect that they will find a friendly judge to delay the exhumation until after the elections, with the hope that the decision will be reversed.

Looking at the 2016 GE Spanish GE results I was quite surprised to see how (relatively) popular the PP are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_S...ngress2016.png

Their die-hard supporters always vote. Nailed-on core support, unbudgeable.

Not Guy Verhofstadt's best political insight (granted C's are in ALDE, but still):

No bloc would win a majority, according to the first poll:

The following is quite a good article:

                              https://www.theguardian.com/news/201...cs-gurtel-case

                              The most disturbing section for me goes thus;

Polls predict that no single party will be able to command a majority; the PP is on course for its worst ever result – although, paradoxically, the party stands a good chance of returning to power if it forms a coalition with Vox and the centre-right party Ciudadanos, as it has done in Andalucía

A ménage à trois of the most awful kind.

In passing, for those of you who read the article/know the facts already; the five-year sentence handed out to José Luis Peñas seems excessive to me given how much he helped the prosecution case.

Very good indeed. It is helpful to have a precis after all of these years.

Very much agree about Peñas. Without him, there are no cases.

I suspect that there will be a small increase in voting share for the pro-independence parties come the next GE but not that much, as turnout and party loyalty is already pretty high.

Yes, looking at the polls, the pro-independence parties were already forecast to win half the Catalan seats in the Spanish parliament, consistent with the results in their own parliament, so more likely to reinforce this, rather than going any higher (the smaller left party CUP is already taking the support that could come from En Comu Podem). Meanwhile, the Spanish judiciary has reactivated the European Arrest Warrant for Puigdemont, which Belgium will continue to resist.

The Spanish police are doing what police do best. Utter vermin. Fuck Spain and fuck the police. And fuck the Guardian too.

I think there should be a referendum. I have learned to keep my gob shut on this where I am because it's not a popular opinion. But what do you want the police to do? Stand by while Barcelona burns? They have a job to do and though no doubt a fair few number of them are vermin you might be grateful for their presence in certain situations.

Also, The Guardian article which you link to seems fair enough though maybe the bit about non-native infiltrators is what irked you.

Anyway, it shouldn't be fuck Spain but fuck the Spanish establishment and Constitution. So I'm with you in your general thrust but I disagree with some of your assertions.

I'd like the police to stop blinding people. And beating them. But as they are the Spanish state's force of armed thugs, that isn't going to happen. So fuck them.

The Guardian article accepts, as you seem to do, the ridiculous idea that burning bins is violence and armed thugs beating people is not.

As for "Spain", there's a point in as much as "fuck Spain" could be misinterpreted as "fuck the people of Spain", which is not what I mean at all, of course. I'd be surprised if anyone here would misinterpret it that way, but you never know. The constitution, the government, the police, the borders, the state, the nation, but not the people.
