This. Fussbudget has made the point on one of the other threads about this set of elections, the Tory mayor of Teesside has been given wads of tatey to splash (and still has presided over a net loss of jobs, but hey) and staunchly Labour Tyneside has been starved of cash (reversing the flow of the past thirty years, but I am off on a parochial rant now, so...).

It's crooked as fuck, but there it is.

tatey? Is that a typo, or a thing?

At least my Northern Independence Party prediction was broadly correct

Cash. Taxpayers', in this instance. Money we have been waiting for forty years and it only came once people voted Leave and Tory*.

*obviously not actually true, plenty of EU funding, but no one ever really knew about it because the MP for the EU Party or the Mayor for the EU Party didn't actually exist so wasn't there to bang on about it all the time and it was only our own money coming back to us anyway and you know how the rest of it goes...

Yeah E10 Rifle I hadn't realised they weren't registered as a party in time at the time, if that makes sense. So yeah, an independent isn't going to get more than a few hundred votes.

(Not in a Westminster constituency election anyway)

But "tatey" is "cash", is it?

It is. Sorry, possibly a poor choice of word. Very, very localised slang.

Don't apologise. It was perfectly obvious what it meant from the context. TonTon is just doing his "I don't understand what words are" thing.

I am generally happy to indulge his endearing foibles.

How do other people learn about things? Is it just Wikipedia for everyone? No asking anyone any questions ever?

Thanks sw2, I've learned something there. From the context it could have been something more general, like "pork", rather than specifically cash, for example.

An independent got almost 3k votes in the by-election.

Yeah, I just spotted that. Oh well. Too late to delete now. Who is Sam Lee?

I use wiki etc but I also like asking here as you often get extra info and interesting tangents.

I see Peter Mandelson is using the Spinal Tap defence, blaming Corbyn is akin to claiming that the crowd were still booing the support act during Tap's set.

I didn't know what it meant either, tbf. (But yep, snagged it from the context.)

(Rhyming slang? 'Tatey (potato) mash = cash'?)

It's about consistent for a small socialist party too though (particularly one calling for independence for a country that most people don't think exists).

Tatey is probably more standard for potato, spud, tater here, or more usually, taties/tateys.

Sorry, a mate once related a bloke he was talking to going on about some guy he was talking to referring to someone well off as 'having plenty of tatey' which tickled him and has become a bit of thing amongst our group of mates, and between us we have only ever heard it a few times in the wild, but we use it quite a bit. Which is why I apologise for using it, as I say, very, very localised but it does actually exist.

You should. I am an honest man. Often.

But no, really, I think it's great. That's how slang works. People say stuff, some sticks and some doesn't.

It's why I laughed out loud when the plasterer suggested I look at a website for render colours called "Jub."
Jub is the word my gang used to use for "idiot."
