James Acaster did a great bit of stand-up on this, of how we basically stole everyone's stuff and then charged them to look at it, but I don't know how to link links, so you'll have to find it yourselves.

Every museum has so many items it is impossible to display them all, so there's no reason to have anything that didn't come from your own history. The reason the British Museum has the Elgin marbles is that Lord Elgin reckoned the occupying Turks would have destroyed them. Even if that was true, it was over 200 years ago, they should be returned, as should all other colonial "trophies ". In case you think I'm picking on the British Museum, the National Museum of Ireland has plenty of stuff that isn't ours.

Hammer and Dan Hicks had an exchange on Twitter last year that was great to see.

Coco Fusco had a review of this book and another book, Cl?mentine Deliss' "The Metabolic Museum," in a recent NYRB. Deliss was the curator of an ethnographic museum in Frankfurt and had some new ideas about how to present remains and artifacts that were taken from Africa. Despite increasing attendance and drawing new attention to the museum, she was fired.

Acaster's piece does, I think, a good job in highlighting the utter absurdity of the whole thing.

As a kid, we were taught Africa had no history and achieved nothing of note until the Europeans turned up (unless you consider swinging by trees and eating each other as an achievement). Ancient Egypt of course were Europeans with fake tans like Yul Brennar, Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Taylor.
At school we were taken to the National History Museum, Science Museum, Commonwealth Institute, National Portrait Gallery and the Transport Museum.

We were never taken to the British Museum and I did not know why until I became an adult.
This is why I have to spend way too much time having to correct westerners who still sadly believe unquestioningly all the negative shite that gets said Africa and by extension Africans and black people in general.
Which reminds me, I need to go back and correct something I let slide a few days ago.
