Are they really getting more of them with this than they did with "they kill birds" or "your teevee won't work when the air is still"?

I have my doubts. In fact, I think more Texans will see through the BS because it is now effecting them directly.

Who knows? I wouldn't count on reason having anything to do with it though. My neighbour is about my age, drives a RAM 1500 which he spends most of his waking hours tinkering with, or cleaning out his garage. He voted Conservative in both the Federal and Provincial elections (there were signs on the lawn.) He seems to have little in the way of social life (his wife's daughter and her family visit now and again, but not recently because covid. ) I'm guessing he doesn't read much, maybe listens to open-mouth radio, and watches Fox News. If I'm right he could well believe it was all the fault of Socialist windmills.

I’ve seen a handful of non-Texans buying into the frozen windmill bollocks hard. They don’t want to listen when it’s mentioned that it’s the coal and gas (and even nuclear) plants that have frozen; even less when Texas’s independent grid is mentioned.

We were there in 1980’s which, as an Aberdeen fan, was great as coincided with the “glory” years - 11 trophies including the Cup Winners Cup and the Super Cup. Ah, those were the days.

The sky could literally be on fire, and they could have witnessed the Governor light the fuse in front of them, and it would still be windmills.

My friend in Houston texted me this last night (UK time):it’s been a tough week. Majority of the city’s , including myself, has no electricity, water, and very limited internet.
I’m lucky to get a few minutes of internet.

I tried WhatsApp call her and it kept cutting out - jeez...this is the US of A ffs...

From an email sent to various recipients:

"we've been powerless for 3 days new. And now the water pressure is mediocre and trending downwards. Things are going just dandy with our deregulated power network here in the not so great state of Texas.

"Deregulation is great! It brings greater efficiency in provision of services and increased savings to consumers!"

-- said an Average Texan who looked suspiciously like he might have worked for Enron once."

Ach I was being flippant. It's my least favourite of the 4 "proper" Scottish cities but it's still awright, if dominated by utterly shit shopping centres that now seem to have eaten the train station. And it's pathetically in hock to the car in terms of urban planning.

But: It's got a wee Karl Marx Hof style 30s housing block at Rosemount Square (built by a Tory cooncil!) and listed granite clad tower blocks that are sparkly and well kept. The dormer Windows in the old tenements and terraces are as alien to the rest of Scotland as their dressed granite facades, and I like their faux Frenchness. The accent is pleasantly weird and I almost got used to the cold. Butteries are great.

Why is texas not connected to the national power grid, and would that have made a difference? Can electrical grids handle things like gas power plants freezing?

Well I knew that before I started. People aren't linking up power grids as part of a cultural marxist jewish plot though.

                                  You're so naive.

They're probably linked to the space lasers too

Don't claim to be an expert, but the commentary I've read says its because they (by which they presumably mean politicians leaned on by power companies) didn't want the federal regulation that goes along with being part of a national grid. So, yeah, cultural marxist jewish plot.

Cooking appliances heated by gas cylinders. Wood-burning stoves. Coal fire ranges.

Even though I fully understand the difference in climate between here and California, I'm still bemused that setting the thermostat at 78 (therefore 25.5 C) is deemed an energy saving measure.

Isn't that because you are thinking of it as a heating issue rather than a cooling issue (for California)?
