It could, of course, be psychosomatic, but I'm waking up feeling unusually refreshed.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and was given a CPAP machine. Except I can\'t get on with it at all; I usually don't fall asleep sleep or, on the odd occasion I do, I wake up a couple of hours later in a panic.

Not sure what to do. The specialist said my apnoea was severe, but I don't have any effects from it (apart from snoring).

Do you not wake up with the fatigue that everyone talks about? I used to work with a guy who walked around like a zombie all day. Everyone just thought he was a bit of a dolt, but it turns out he was waking up like 60 times a night or something. The CPAP sorted him out.

Yeah, some lit candles, for many monks, 2-3 in the morning was Matins, so they'd all go and pray together before going back to sleep.

(Knocking boots being another popular activity, there was a belief that you were better at it at this time.)

Hi WOM. Much sympathy to you and L, I used to have this issue and it can be very disruptive. Hope your solution is sustainable.

As WOM is a DIY man, I find myself wondering what type of tape he's using. My bet is gaffer tape. Duck tape would stay on better but might knack your face a bit when you have to remove it.

I snore a bit - but any sort of cold or phlegm-related issues make it significantly worse, as does going to bed pissed. I start out on my side, but inevitably end up on my back at some point, making noises like a surfacing water buffalo. This usually earns me a dig in the ribs, but if I'm pissed then I'm sometimes impossible to wake and Mrs TrL may decamp to the spare room. I reckon it's got worse as I've chubbed up too, so losing a stone or so may help reduce the number of times it happens.

Cheers, DM. I'm willing to stick with it. It's no bother to me, and lets her sleep through the night.

Gaffer or Duct tape is plentiful around these parts, but for this job I've chosen a nice 3M medical, suitable for gauze and bandages and whatnot. It tears fairly accurately, but I might look around for a dispenser to make my life a little easier. Visitors to the bedroom might wonder what we get up to, but that's not my concern.

WOM just make sure you don’t use this method if you’re suffering from a badly blocked nose.

Yeah, I'll be right pissed if I die in the night.

No, that's the odd thing. And in the sleep laboratory, the doctor said I wasn't breathing for something like 60 seconds at a time. However, I've always been able to hold my breath for a long time, so maybe that's the reason it doesn't wake me up.

Thanks WOM, I’ll give the taping up the mouth a go. My snoring is apparently getting worse and I do sometimes wake myself up. Can you post a photo of the tape, please, that would be helpful.

It is hereditary. My father was the go-to guy for testing new anti-snoring inventions. But, as I recall, nothing really worked.

Here you go. With finger, for size comparison.

I think it's probably your standard first-aid kit gauze tape. About 1 inch wide. I've been mucking about with technique, but the winner seems to be a small strip 'top to bottom' and wider one straight across. 5 successful nights now.

A picture of the taped solution would be helpful to all.

This is L's greatest caper yet

I hope she gets full value for the movie rights

Ha ha! Ok, I’ll give it a go. I’ll not be happy if I wake up dead though.

Good luck. It's worked very well for me.
