    Diwali

    Today is the main day of the multi-religious celebration, with the Hindu Chancellor of the Exchequer lighting lamps outside 11 Downing Street, while President Higgins has tweeted his best wishes to Irish celebrants:

    Leicester is the only city to have been under continuous lockdown since March and now it's lost its greatest day of the year while the government focuses on "saving Christmas."

      Until yesterday I'd thought that Diwali was an exclusively Hindu occasion or, more accurately, I didn't realise that Sikhs celebrated it. Enlightened, I've just sent my best wishes to my Sikh friend in California.

        Sikhs are sometimes claimed as Hindus.

          Some Buddhists also celebrate Diwali. Certainly in Nepal anyway

            Before Islam and especially Christianity hitting India, Hinduism was a very broad church. That being completely the wrong expression, but certainly Hindu Fundamentalism couldn't exist before the colonial period.

              There are only around 25m Sikhs, which I found a little surprising.

                Lockdown has really ruined Diwali for me. By which I mean I've not been in the office where the Indian members of staff bring in home-made samosas.

                    <applause>

                    Actually we* Sikhs also have a celebration at or about the same time every year. Eventually, what is effectively the Sikh Synod decided to adopt the same day as Diwali - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandi_Chhor_Divas

                    *I use "we" in the loosest sense. Whilst i was brought up a Sikh, I have for most of my life been an atheist. But we are recognised as a separate racial group rather than simply a belief system. Hence, I can identify as a Sikh without believing in Sikhism.
