While global attention has been monopolised by the American election count, a military conflict has broken out on the Horn of Africa between the Ethiopian federal government and that of the Tigray region. Traditionally, the government in Addis Ababa had been dominated by the Amhara ethnic group, but the fall of the Dergue in 1991 was precipitated by a coalition between Tigrayans and Eritreans. Recently, however, power has passed to Abiy Ahmed, an Oromo, who has attempted to assert central government dominance over the autonomous regions, and secession could ultimately prove the consequence.
