    Who's Toobin Who?

This story has amused me far more than it should, really:

    https://www.vice.com/en/article/epdg...-dick-incident

The New Yorker has suspended reporter Jeffrey Toobin. Sources tell VICE it’s because he exposed himself during a Zoom call last week between members of the New Yorker and WNYC radio.

Toobin said in a statement to Motherboard: “I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers.”

“I believed I was not visible on Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video,” he added.

New Yorker spokesperson Natalie Raabe said: “Jeffrey Toobin has been suspended while we investigate the matter.”

                  Two serious issues:

                  1) There's a gender divide in the twitter reaction to this story: should we be laughing at an action that, even if unintentionally, exposed other people to a man masturbating live on their computer feed?

                  2) White male professional privilege is the only reason Toobin hasn't already been fired or pressured to resign

This whole thread is an example of the gulf in framing between the two:

Ah the old, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for people to know I was jerking off during the meeting" excuse.

I only found out about this whole thing about an hour ago. Has he really not?

No, he is suspended by the New Yorker and is on leave at CNN. I don't think either of these would be the case if he were in any non-privileged group (black, female, working-class, etc). Maybe Ursus knows more about the employment law dimension?

He hasn't been sacked yet, that's not to say he won't be sacked.

No, I assume his contract is one where he's entitled to an investigation. However, it's an example of his privilege/entitlement that he probably knows he is guilty of gross misconduct* but is not resigning.

*I mean, wanking in front of colleagues must be gross misconduct, regardless of thinking you were off-camera. It's like wanking in a closet and not realizing it had a see-through wall.

Laughing at something doesn't mean you don't recognize its seriousness. This is a common fallacy.

I don't like Toobin much, but surely there's a massive difference between:

                                  1) Wanking because he's got Louis CK power abuse thing going on (where he wants to be seen wanking)
                                  2) Wanking because he's in a work conference and bored shitless and forgot to turn off his video
                                  3) Wanking in a work conference whilst using the images of work colleagues to turn him on, all the while forgetting to turn the camera off
                                  4) Wanking in a work conference knowing he was visible but thinking he could wriggle off the hook by saying it was case 2

                                  4) just isn't viable to me; the issue is whether it was 1,2 or 3. 1 is totally gross misconduct and also a police matter.

                                  3) is a grey area, work wise since it is something that affects relationships at work.

                                  2) is misconduct, and there's a lutheran-style puritanism at work in many responses along the lines of 'no one should ever wank at work' which is just moral majority meets turbo capitalist boss bullshit.

Since we don't know which of 1,2 or 3 this was, it's difficult to say. I assume there will be further leaks to provide the info.

Yes, what NHH said. I’d add that it’s obvious the guy didn’t have the power to get away with this (Harvey W style), so I don’t see how it can be a case of scenario 1 unless Toobin is either incredibly stupid (seems v unlikely) or driven by really pathologically strong sexual urges which fall under the broad heading of mental illness. In other words I think the above post by AP about an “excuse” is probably way off the mark - we are probably in territory 2 or 3.

I'm not sure I get the "I was bored in this meeting so i decided to have a cheeky wank" thing. I mean there's bored and there's bored. Perhaps I'm just less self-loving than Toobin, or apparently one or two of you, but if I'm on Zoom and get a bit bored, I look at OTF, or at a push facebook or twitter.

What if they were on a coffee break and he decided he'd have a wank break with the coffee? I need Ursus's legal expertise here.

I should also add heterosexual privilege: imagine if he were a well-known gay person and the porn on his computer were gay porn.
