Didn't you lose one of those at a Black Grape show in '97?

So. With the bargain Red Wing shoes being currently re-floated in the Suez Canal after a week of clogging the world's busiest shipping route, I decided to spend the money "saved" (yes, I know) at a local clothes shop instead.

The purchases: a lovely Carhartt WIP Chambray Shirt reduced from ?75 to ?35 and a Paul Smith t-shirt reduced from ?70 to ?30. I placed the order via the website at 10.30 and by 14.30 they'd hand delivered them with a note thanking me for shopping local.

      Which was nice.

Oooh. Which shop was that, TG?

The abysmally-named-but-run-and-staffed-by-lovely-people Meet Bernard in Greenwich.

Meet Bernard is an excellent name for a shop. I hope that they give short shrift to your proposal to relaunch it as Meet Geddy.

Be much cooler if they'd called it "Meat Bernard."

The lovely coves at Meet Bernard have come up trumps again.

I found a rather nice Armor Lux sweatshirt on the website, reduced from ?80 to ?40 - this one, if you're interested - so decided to take the plunge and order it in large, being the only size left and not minding a bit of room in a jumper.

They called me on Friday to apologise as they have apparently run out of the yellow, but "we have the same one in navy, if that's any good? It's not on sale in the shop but we'll honour the sale price". I mean, I wasn't massively sold on the yellow anyway fella, this represents a result.

So it's just arrived in the post (I think from the Dulwich shop, rather than Greenwich) and it's great. Especially as it's a double bargain.

There's clearly something in this shopping local thing.

I find the Scottish stores Kafka Mercantile and Dick's (no sniggering) to be really good to deal with, both my e-mail and over the phone. Oi Polloi and Nigel Cabourn less so.

I've had a couple of Armor Lux tops but they shrunk, undoubtedly my fault but it has put be off.

TK Maxx is ridiculous. Latest bargain - a pair of Edwin ED80 jeans reduced from ?110 RRP to ?30. Yep.

One for EIM and other devotees of Eric Cantona, Sock Council are about to release some Eric socks commemorating him kicking the racist at Selhurst park. There also doing some Cavani ones (El Matador).

Another TK Maxx result. This Kronstadt long sleeve T for less than half price.

30% off Mr Porter today, so I got a Portuguese Flannel virgin wool overshirt. It's almost tweed-like in appearance so is obviously great.

Glasgow. I got a Fjallraven lightweight sweater and a Lacoste chambray shirt. On sale, natch.

Oh, and some orange and white polka dot bamboo socks, but I'm not sure they're "fashion". I just liked them.

I saw a geriatric casual wearing a Benetton rugby shirt at Brentford yesterday and have since felt a renewed glow of vindication for resisting the impulse to get one when they were reissued. Further confirmation that the inner fourteen year old no longer has anything useful to contribute on this subject.

There's a lasting satisfaction to be had from not buying things that buying things can struggle to compete with.

I've decided an end must be brought to the bastardised facsimile cosplay "Casual" movement. A no to Stone Island, CP Company and adidas. Death to visible labels. A return to individuality. I'm only going to dress like a character from The Talented Mr Ripley until Scotts Menswear closes for good. 1959 Amalfi Ultras. Capri Pant Bastard Squad. Dolce Vita Firm.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I need a proper straw hat for the summer, since the skin on my left temple and round my left eye burns the second the sun hits it, even when slathered in Allan Donald levels of factor 50 sun cream.

Can the OTF fashion brigade recommend something? Not a pork pie hat.

Also, both my watches have decided now is the time their batteries must conk out...

I concur with these sentiments but there is the danger of it leading to a more specialised type of cosplay. I'm mostly buying Japanese brands so I'm a 1930s American farmhand meets at-ease Navy sailor.

It was founded by Massimo Osti after Stone Island and before Left Hand. The early stuff, from the 1990s are top-draw with the Miglia jacket being a design classic.

Thanks to this, I'm now aware of reissued Benetton rugby shirts and am resisting the impulse to buy.
