A thousand quid in a garden centre. Even my mum wouldn't spend that.

The fact is that when a government is as rotten a d corrupt as this one is- and has such a shabby approach to procurement it’s not surprising people ask questions-amd don’t always believe the answers

In an ideal world the home office would spend 100% of their budget on cupcakes rather than spending, for example ?4.5bn on prisons.

I really think people are looking for something that isn't there with this.

Why were individual government departments buying PPE on an individual basis? Why didn't the Government assign a body/group to do the purchasing collectively?

Why did the government even need to get involved? I'm sure it would have been easier to let the NHS sort out their own PPE from their recognised suppliers, especially as time was of the essence. I'm sure the NHS' distribution network could have been used to supply care homes and local councils. The paperwork and invoicing could have been settled after the event.

If I can work this out I'm sure it's not beyond the ken of civil servants or the government ministers whose party has been in power for a decade..

It's tempting to cut the government a little slack due to the exceptional circumstances of the last year but let's not forget that we heard about experienced PPE manufacturers being overlooked for contracts last year. The list of expenses illustrates the self-serving expediency used by this particular government, things are done and money is found if the political will is there.

In the 21st century Welsh semi-pro football clubs can't play matches if they fail the licensing process but the government of one of the most prosperous places on earth seems able to operate without logically developed plans for emergency situations, it's an utterly laughable situation.

How did the govt get away from obeying EU procurement directives when they were still bound by them pre Hard Brexit? Was it using the "Emergency" nature of the Covid threat to override open tenders?

Fair play, BLT does seem to be suggesting these were purchases made by a grossly incompetent government official who was panicking when faced with an issue that couldn't be dealt with using political games. And that is reasonably realistic.

That's the company name as registered at company house. They don't need to use that name for trading. In fact they're still trading as Beautiful Brows and Lashes. Their website states that they're Global Beauty Products Limited. It also mentions Beautiful Brows Ltd, the predecessor company, which appears to be an error.

The home office is evil, cruel and dysfunctional to a point that can sometimes be comical. If people are saying their procurement strategy for PPE in the opening months of the pandemic was incompetent, wasteful and possibly illegal, it would be totally in keeping with everything else the home office do. But that doesn't mean this is evidence of money laundering or "priti patel getting her eyebrows done" or whatever the more lurid insinuations on twitter are.

The more people continue to act like there's something in this that there isn't, the more the home office get away with their (routine, everyday) criminal behaviour.

You're wrong to draw inference from the fact that Beautiful Brows Ltd stopped trading in 2018 because the successor company was (and still is) using Beautiful Brows and Lashes as a trading name

I got that bit. Why is it letting patel or the Home Office off the hook?

It's not letting them off the hook. It's nailing them for the right reasons. This Government is corrupt, but using a credit card to shovel money to companies is not their style. Spending 12 times more on their own PPE than clothing for refugees is.

Given the home office lose 75% of cases that are brought against them it's really them that should be paying punitive costs...
