I was at a reception hosted by the SDLP at the Labour Party conference in the early 2000s where Hume gave the speech. He praised mo mowlem effusively and made not one reference to the then current SoS Peter Mandelson despite the latter standing 2 feet in front of him. A great snub.
I must admit that I thought that he'd died, probably of a stress-related illness, years ago. I'd seen him looking unwell on my TV screen for about three decades.

Sadly, he had been suffering from a dementia-related illness for at least the last decade. It took bravery to encourage SF to come in from the cold and embark on the path to peace, knowing that his own party would almost certainly pay the electoral price as a result.
