    John Hume 1937 - 2020

John Hume Nobel Laureate has died "after a short illness"

A true hero, and political great.

    RIP

I was at a reception hosted by the SDLP at the Labour Party conference in the early 2000s where Hume gave the speech. He praised mo mowlem effusively and made not one reference to the then current SoS Peter Mandelson despite the latter standing 2 feet in front of him. A great snub.

RIP indeed. An incredibly brave man.

I must admit that I thought that he'd died, probably of a stress-related illness, years ago. I'd seen him looking unwell on my TV screen for about three decades.

That’s what I took from the reception - the bravery of the SDLP in bringing party politics to a gunfight.

R.I.P, a great man who helped make Ireland what it is today.

Sadly, he had been suffering from a dementia-related illness for at least the last decade. It took bravery to encourage SF to come in from the cold and embark on the path to peace, knowing that his own party would almost certainly pay the electoral price as a result.

Wow. That's even lower than I thought that paper had sunk.

It’s been full on fascist and nasty with it ( with good sports coverage) for a while now. Used to give Johnson a quarter of a million a year.

                          Broadly what everyone said above

I agree with his fellow SDLP veteran Austin Currie. The Greatest Irishman since...Jack Charlton

                            (Currie actually said Parnell)

Instrumental in the Credit Union movement as well.

Candles will be lit now across Ireland in tribute.
