I know it's easy to tear to pieces Johnson's analogy of the time that Britain "needed less Boycott at the crease, and more Botham" [to negotiate our own new trade deals with China, or the US]. Because it is. Easy, that is. The fucking halfwit.
IAlso Gisela Stuart Who is I think the biggest puzzle of the lot. How do you morph from Bavarian bookseller to Labour amp to pro Bush Henry Jackson Society member to bookkeeping vote leave dodgy funds.
a good excuse to post Beefy getting utterly schooled by wee Scotch modern studies nerds back in the day.
You know, apart from being a free market Tory prick and a couple of patronising 'listen, loves' he didn't come across too bad. But, do the BBC still do owt like that? It's relatively hard hitting and it feels like there used to be loads more of that type of stuff yesteryear, but I don't watch children's telly now, if it even still exists at all.
This is that "populism" we hear so much about, isn't it?
I'm somewhat conflicted as the cricket club I frequented as a child (a neighbour played for them) was near to Epworth where he lived, and Botham was a frequent and popular visitor, often bringing other players like Allan Lamb, or whoever was left over from the previous night's piss up. I had a bowl to his son Liam, who would only have been about 7 but the little sod still hit my 11 year old "fast" bowling back over my head.
And of course around the same time he was turning out for Scunthorpe United, quite seriously and passionately, without a hint of "PR coup". And him and (Scunny goalkeeper) Joe Neenan beat up that sailor outside Tiffany's on Donny Road.
Having such a national figure as a local fixture was exciting, especially for a place like Scunthorpe. That's not to say I liked him, he was very Bothamesque, that's for sure.
So yeah, give him a peerage.
And give Kevin Keegan a knighthood while you're at it.
Fucking Davidson is apparently all palsy with Johnson now. Unofficial Adviser on The Union. 6 months ago she was resigning after briefing against the cunt.
Haven't got time to trawl through that to work it out. Who has, in fact, just got a peerage? [Edit: or is that a reference to the main thread topic? In any case, I'm not sure what the point is here.]
