I don't think that's it. We're already well past that point. You see all sorts of stories popping up here and there about funding crises, and they all seem to be following a consistent pattern. The govt loads more and more responsibilities on one level down from the govt, then it cuts central funding to that organisation, and allows those services to wither as the provider steadily borrows its way into insolvency. The money doesn't appear on the govts accounts really, and it provides 'savings' to allow them to transfer money to the people they actually care about.

A good example is that local govt. The Tories have been transferring large numbers of responsibilities onto the local authorties, and have cut the funding to these organisations from the equivalent of £45 billion in 2010 to £18 billion now, with the result that most english local authorities range from dangerously highly indebted, to bankrupt. Any Labour Govt that comes in and seeks to restore funding to the local authorities to get them to where they were in 2010 is going to have to find £27 billion a year, but that funding was inadequate for the level of services they were expected to supply in 2010, so in reality they will have to come up with far more than that to stave off bankruptcy, at the current shitty level of provision. Now apply this to a huge range of other organizations and any new govt on its first day is going to have to confront all of these disasters at once. The implication of this is that the UK may already be effectively bankrupt.

in this context, tax cuts are no more than throwing a bone to their supporters to stave off a leadership challenge before the election, and to give the newpapers something vaguely positive to talk about. The part of this that fucks up labour is that the backbone of modern politics is that taxes can only go down, even if they're already laughably low. This is simply making a much bigger hole for labour to try and climb out of, rather than targetting a particular area. The UK is massively more fucked than people think, and I have no faith in Labour's ability to do anything to fix it, or in the population of the UK to withstand the measures required to partially fix these problems. It's just a small scale version of trussonomics.

What % of people at the bottom can vote and make a difference? What about the top?

    This country is fucked.

The Budget was a big bag of nowt - marginal tweaks, symbolic gestures and selective data points. But really, it is most years so I'm not surprised.

That would require Labour wanting to use the money to fund the NHS.

    Or not.

My first thought was I think it is a Labour policy to tax non-doms, so this is basically daring Starmer to say he will revoke the changes and tax the editor of the Daily Mail.
