Ah so now it's confirmed he hasn't paid a penalty. Let's see if that's a technicality and he didnt make some type of payment to HMRC that isn't in fact a penalty in law.

Sunak knew about this since at least October, I'm hoping this won't be allowed to rest.

Sunak has shown the exact same circle the wagons attitude to this issue as Johnson did with similar behaviour in the party, only dealing with it when he had no other option.
The core belief amongst all Tories is "we're better than you".

Zahawi appears to be claiming that he didn't realise he was under investigation, that time that investigators were asking him questions in front of his lawyers and advisors.

Lying is just automatic for him at this point. Shameless.

He'll be back, he can take tips on returning from the Home Secretary. And the last one.

Zahawi's parting shot letter is an object lesson in grade A arrogance.
No apologies, no remorse. Instead he spews four paragraphs blowing smoke up his own arse then finished by blaming the media for daring to do their job properly for once by digging up his tax history instead of vilifying minorities and poor people.

Using the "sleepwalking" defence to instructing multiple sets of lawyers to negotiate with HMRC and threaten journalists with defamation claims

Something else mentioned on the news this morning is that Gove was going on to the Sunday politics shows to talk about Grenfell. It was going to be a very rare occasion where the Government was going to actually take partial responsibility (not full responsibility, like they should, obviously, but still, a start) for the policies that allowed this to happen.
This should be the leading item on the news. People should be watching it and be getting very angry about a corrupt Government that allows greedy companies to get away with negligent practices that endangers lives. 72 people died, ffs.
Instead they are now getting angry about one man who tried to get away with not paying a 7 figure tax bill and failed. Nobody died.
I'm of the belief that Zahawi's sacking now is not a coincidence, but instead was held off to bury the Grenfell story under another shitstorm of par for the course corruption from yet another corrupt Tory.

That strikes me as extremely plausible

Commissioner of Public Appointments removes himself from investigation into relationship between BBC Chair Richard Sharp and Johnson as he has met him on previous occasions. It only took him a fucking week to establish this.

Sunak is like the CEO that always needs at least one layer of protection around him in order to come to a decision so he had someone to blame if it went tits up. Sunak comes from a banking background and this is typical behaviour. He needs to have someone else to tell/advise him what to do as a protective layer - if more info comes to light about Zahawi that gets him off the hook (very unlikely) then Sunak will blame his Ethics Advisor and reinstate. Sunak is not a leader, he has no ideas, no vision or ability to motivate, he is more of a middle manager, a technocrat/administrator who got lucky and got the top job by default, he couldn't lead his team out of a wet paper bag.
