I don’t know who that is, sadly.

One of the pioneers of research into cross cultural groups. His theory of cultural dimensions still gets used today. In a nutshell, he came up with a series of variables of culture (indvidualism-collectivism; uncertainty avoidance; power distance; and masculinity-femininity*) which as time went on he added two more to (long term orientation, and indulgence-restraint).

(*Often these days the preferred terminology for this is competitive vs cooperative or task orientation vs person orientation)

He's been at the top of his field for getting on for 50 years. Well, he had been, until last week, when he popped his clogs. Appropriately for a Dutchman.

Here's the wiki primer, if you're at all interested https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofste...ensions_theory

I’d heard of many of those ideas, but didn’t know his name.

Same here, which is my loss, as I could definitely have benefited from his work in my professional life

I had never heard of him until the last two years when studying. Then he came up by far the most of any academic across modules. Even Michael Porter didn't get as much attention. Mostly really useful and practical stuff too but danger of stereotyping if you rely on it uncritically.
