The "best" dishes of each country

From an article on Farandwide.com. I think the criteria is more "most symbolic of" or "most locally popular". The order is by population size, the descriptions to remind me what some of them are. Has the OTF collective eaten all these and do you agree with the choices? I began to notice how many african places have banana in a curry based dish. Never tried that, is it as nice as it sounds?

No country worth anything has a national dish

Regional at best, local even better, familial if one really cares

Word. Hake cheeks Basque style are very moreish but. Catalan tomato bread beats the fuck out of everything else on the menu there, including their weird spring onion dipped in Romesco sauce fetish.

I was just about to put the same Sporting. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they were having/had it for a meal.

Is it more a Southern thing?

I can confirm Edinburgh "gastropubs" are known to serve Bangers n mash, but that's pretty much a southron England enclave but with rugger boys called Alasdair and Farqhuar instead of Toby and Olly anyways.

Bangers and mash was often the main constituent of a 'slap-up meal' in the world of DC Thomson comics, never a reliable indicator of what was going on in the real world.

You'd have been seriously misguided to pin your culinary dreams on sausages in the '70s and '80s. The gristle moment was very much when, not if.

The only place I had a meal in Dundee prior to my sisters graduation in 2009 was Littlewoods caff in the upstairs of a 70s as fuck shopping centre. bangers and Mash would have been very much "slap up" on their menu, and probably even that would have been beyond a DC hack back in their parsimonious heyday.

My other half went to university in Dundee in the late '80s/early '90s and always looks hugely sceptical whenever a story about the city's regeneration and shiny future pops up.

It's way more a "real city" than Aberdeen these days, the biotech and Tech industry massage the GDP, and you can even get decent food. But yeh, it was once just Kirkcaldy with bigger tenements. Which is probably why I never even considered going to Uni there. That and Glasgow being the only Proper City in Scotland.

Turkish delight is hardly a "dish". I call bollocks on the whole list

I've added to the opening post above.

                                  Scotland comes out as Haggis.

                                  Wales as Rarebit.

                                  Ireland as Boxty.

and New Zealand as the Hangi, which I've actually experienced once, oddly in a pub garden in Hitchin.

Boxty seems a bit fuckin dry to have as a dish on its own as opposed to a breakfast bulker. And potato scones/pancakes arnae unique to the 32. Would have thought even that rarely seen out of Temple Bar/O'Neills on St Andrews St/every hotel restaurant that offers "traditional Irish dancing and music" "Irish stew" might have made the list.

Also, he does seem to be ignoring one of the richest, sophisticated, oldest and most delicious culinary cultures on earth, in favour of something that is essentially inedible. I mean, he could easily have said Kebab, and had an arguable case.

The best Irish dish is either fresh mackerel and new potatoes and a lot of butter, or what I'm about to eat now, which is a mountain of bacon and turnips, and potatoes and butter. I kind of have to include the butter, given how much of it I'm about to use. It's fucking cold out.
