In a meeting today some medical colleagues expressed concerns about the Indian variant and said they thought any suggested dates for opening up are in jeopardy.

The 21.6 great liberation is busted imo...

They are unlikely to back away from the easing of next Monday now (too many businesses and individuals have invested too much time and money preparing for it), but are already backpedalling on 21st June cessation of all restrictions. It's the sort of media leak method of getting people used to a policy that we have seen countless times previously.

Apparently, 61 cases of the Indian variant have been detected here - no direct flights between the two countries, so presumably must have come from Britain.

As a comparison to those 600,000 deaths, a quote from this website: https://www.militaryfactory.com/amer...20that%20total).
"In its first 100 years of existence, over 683,000 Americans lost their lives, with the Civil War accounting for 623,026 of that total (91.2%). Comparatively, in the next 100 years, a further 626,000 Americans died through two World Wars and several more regional conflicts (World War 2 representing 65% of that total)."

Swedish intensive care has been working at full capacity for months on end, the intensive care staff have been completely worn down, and loads of scheduled care has been delayed.

Denmark and Norway have a huge spare capacity in intensive care and offered to take patients.

                    Sweden politely declined.

What a bunch of absolute arseholes are in charge of this country.

SAGE concludes with "high confidence" that it is highly likely the Indian variant (B 1.617.2) is more transmissible than the Kent variant (B 1.117) and that it may be as 50 percent more transmissible)

New cases of Covid-19 in Papua New Guinea have increased 250% in the last week. And that's believed to be a massive underestimate. There are only an estimated 5,000 health workers for the population of around 10 million, or one health worker for every 2,000 people: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-56926131.amp

Anyone know if there is a set day when the UK updates its green list (and red list etc) for other countries? And if so, when is it?

Well, British Airways have just launched a media campaign advertising new routes and cheap flights to places like Wroclaw, Gdansk and Cluj from July 1st, so I'm guessing they've had a tip off.

I was reflecting on the official global mortality rates, headed by Hungary at just over 0.3%, which is pretty grim.

Then I realised that the rate in my area is about the same, perhaps even a little higher.

                                        Which was a bit shocking.

I wonder which global region has been hardest hit, according to the highly dubious official figures at least?

The big emphasis on Radio 5 Breakfast news this morning was about how empty and lovely the Algarve beaches are, ready and waiting for the first flights of British tourists scheduled for today.

                                          What could possibly go wrong?

Also, how many times can pandemic-management advice rely on the phrase "people using their common sense"?

Again, what could possibly go wrong?

The messaging is also back to 'everything will be fine and all restrictions will be lifted on the 21st of June' this morning....

India's new case numbers of Covid-19 have been going down (at least according to official numbers) but it recorded its highest ever death toll today, 4,340 deaths attributed to Covid-19 in one day.

Im wondering if after all the sacrifices "we“ have made, this bloody Indian Covid (and implicitly those Boltony, Leicestery type people, you know, the people who live in multi - generational accomodation) are fucking things up for us on our final run to pubs and beaches?

I'm abroad and way out of touch, and not yet heard anything directly implicit on the BBC, but there's quite a bit of non - implicit stuff.
