That's what I thought - if said virus is over there, then why run the risk of bringing it over here?

I realise this is a bit "They knew the risks when they bought the plane ticket. I say 'Let em crash!'"

        30th January update.

7,711 confirmed cases (for context, the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak had 8,098 confirmed cases worldwide in total). 170 deaths. I read one statistic that claimed that 96% of the people who have contracted the disease have neither died nor recovered, but are still being treated, so the proportion of people who will eventually succumb is still unknown.

Every province in China now has confirmed cases (Tibet was previously holding out and had closed all tourist attractions as a precaution).

The UK evacuation was apparently delayed due to not getting the right consents from the Chinese. I don't know if this is at all related to British requests for dual nationals to be allowed to leave (China doesn't recognise dual nationality and Chinese citizens are not allowed to leave the country, leaving at least one family with a British father, Chinese mother and 9-year-old daughter at risk of indefinite separation). South Korea has reportedly also had difficulty getting the right permits to evacuate its citizens.

A cruise ship with 6,000 passengers near Rome is preventing disembarkation due to a couple from Hong Kong displaying symptoms.

India has confirmed its first case.

The virus appears to affect men worse than women.

Has anyone else read Station Eleven?

As good at it is, this mightn't be the most advisable time to start reading it.

I would be very surprised if takings at Chinese restaurants are not considerably down at the moment, as the uninformed opt for an Indian instead.

Each morning in China the National Health Commission provides updates.

The total death toll in China now stands at 213. That’s up from 170 announced at this time yesterday. That’s an increase of 25%, which is slightly down on yesterday’s increase (29%).

Confirmed cases inside China are 9,096. That’s up from the figure quoted at around this time yesterday of 7,711. It makes it an 18% rise in confirmed infections over the 24-hour period.
The number of confirmed cases has now surpassed that of SARS.

The WHO has declared a global health emergency

The US has issued a travel advisory telling citizens NOT to travel to China

                      31st January update:

9,962 cases, 213 deaths (all in China). More cases than SARS but fewer deaths so far.

2 confirmed cases in the UK. A case confirmed in the Philippines. It's spread to 18 countries in total. 98 confirmed cases outside China, no deaths.

The WHO has declared a global health emergency, mostly so they can provide more support to lower and middle-income countries in terms of testing, diagnosis and treatment.

83 Britons and 27 EU nationals on a flight from Wuhan to the UK, will be quarantined for 2 weeks.

Sweden, Italy and Russia join the list of countries with confirmed cases. Thailand joins the list of countries with confirmed in-country transmission after a taxi driver has been diagnosed following contact with a Chinese tourist.

Foreign nationals who had recently travelled to China will be barred from entering the US, the Trump administration said.

The move is one of several measures, announced during a press conference at the White House, that US officials said were aimed at limiting the risks posed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The president's temporary order will prohibit foreign nationals -- aside from immediate family of US citizens and permanent residents -- who have traveled to China in the prior 14 days from entering the US.

Separately, officials said all flights from China will be limited to seven airports.

This is the most dystopian shit I’ve ever seen.
To be fair that could describe any number of things the Chinese government has done in the last few years.

Just to put things into perspective. I saw a thing on CNN pointing out that 19 million people in the USA have been infected by the flu this winter, leading to an estimated 10,000 deaths.

The possible difference is in the proportion of people for whom the disease is fatal. The fatality rate for flu is about 0.1%. For SARS it was about 10%. That's a big difference. We don't know the fatality rate of this coronavirus yet, but early estimates are around 2-2.5%. Not likely to wipe out humanity, but could kill millions if the spread was not disrupted at all.

                                            1st February update.

At least 11,823 confirmed cases and 259 deaths in China. Nearly 18,000 suspected cases.

129 overseas cases in 22 countries with Spain joining the ranks of the infected.

The US and Australia are both denying entry to any non-citizen who has visited China in the last 14 days, going beyond WHO recommendations and angering China.

The fatality rate depends on which model is used. There could be tens of thousands more people who have/had Corona virus but were never diagnosed as having it, because they just had a mild cough that went away after a few days.

This is good on the science uncertainties and methodologies behind the quick response epidemiology necessary to deal with nCov19
