Oh dear, going there Tomorrow. Workmates have asked me to bring hand sanitiser which is in short supply.

Doesn't the Wuhan province sound like somewhere from them old Kung Fu films I watched as a child.

You might be thinking of Liu Bei.

To put that graphic in a bit of perspective, Wuhan alone has 11m people, so 2,700 cases across all of Hubei is still a tiny, tiny fraction of the population.

Not exactly. Assuming they're medical grade and you change them regularly, they can protect against virus particles carried in aerosols (i.e. people sneezing).

Of course, that's not the only way viruses propagate.

              What's with the goggles?

There is some concern that one can be infected through the eyes if the virus is airborne.

Indeed, some health workers in Wuhan believe that this was how they contracted the virus. As a result, health workers there are being issued with goggles and some "civilians" are following that lead.

I've been told that they're mandated. Like the masks you have to wear the goggles outside

Perhaps, though I'm not sure that there are enough googles available for that to be actually enforced.

Noticeable increase in the number people wearing masks in downtown Vancouver yesterday. All, so far as I could tell, persons of Asian decent.

Meanwhile a Toronto district school board warns parents about racism in connection with the virus.

How come that supermarket was open when everything around was shutterd up. And that it still appeared fully stccked and not picked clean. I half expected him to get there only to find mouldy apples, fig rolls and bicarbonate of soda.

When I was in China, CarreFour was the expensive supermarket that mainly catered to foreigners and the elite. Think Waitrose equivalent. Possibly most people can't afford to stock up for weeks from there.

I have received numerous videos in the last couple of days regarding the "exotic" side of the Chinese diet. There seems to be an inference this is behind these outbreaks.

It's more the practise of having the abattoir at the point of sale that is suspected of being a cause of the virus. Having lots of live animals packed together in a market in less than sanitary conditions and then slaughtered right before sale is a recipe for viruses jumping between species.

I went and looked at news on Macau. They've had 7 confirmed cases. They're monitoring tourists for symptoms. Some New Year celebrations were cancelled. Some casinos are considering shutting down.

They must be losing guests anyway due to the travel bans.

It was pretty much the standard Tesco equivalent in Beijing when I was there, with other stores taking over the mantle of more exclusive supermarketd. But Beijing is more affluent than Wuhan.

More than 6,000 cases now. More than the number of SARS cases in mainland China during that crisis.

                                          29th January update.

5,974 confirmed cases. 9,239 suspected cases. 132 deaths. Reports that the number of cases may actually be higher because of limited access to testing kits in some areas.

Youngest diagnosis (not death), a 9-month-old baby girl in Beijing.

Australia plans to controversially quarantine its returning citizens on Christmas island. They've also announced that they've successfully recreated the virus in a laboratory (first time outside China, China has previously been sending the genome details to other countries for testing), which may help with efforts to create a cure and / or vaccine.

BA has cancelled all flights to and from mainland China. Many other countries have limited flights to and from China. Starbucks has closed 2,000 outlets in China. The UK is arranging evacuation of its citizens from Hubei.

A new case reported in the United Arab Emirates. A few African countries report quarantining Chinese visitors / returners, but no confirmed cases yet.

Also, the WHO upgraded the threat level from 'moderate' to 'high' in a footnote of a report, without announcing anything.

Turns out that we're not bringing UK citizens back. No reason given and Matt Hancock join the legions of other Government ministers in hiding.

Could be worse, the Aussies are repatriating their citizens to Christmas Island and charging them for the privilege.

To be honest it does seem rather pointless repatriating people. The virus will be here before they are anyway.
