The Philippines exceeded one million confirmed cases of Covid-19 today. It's second wave had been worse than its first, but new case numbers have been falling since early April.

It's amazing that the countries run by right wing populist pseudo fascists are the ones suffering the most.

When your whole political philosophy is built on easy answers and blaming someone else, it's no surprise that these politicians don't have a clue when faced with real problems.

For the first time India reported more deaths from Covid-19 in the last seven days (17,330) than any other country, including Brazil.

That's in total terms. 66 countries, including most of Eastern Europe and South America, still reported more deaths per million population in the last week. Though India's figures are believed to be under reported as many people are now dying before they have a chance to be diagnosed.

India reported over 2.3 million new cases in the last week. At the beginning of the pandemic, it took us four months to reach 2.3 million cases worldwide (on April 16th 2020).

The unequal access to vaccines means that Palestine is currently reporting 13 times more new cases of Covid-19 daily than Israel, even though Israel's population is about 4 million higher than Palestine's.

If you go to worldometers you can see it clearly. Today for example Palestine is reporting 1414 new cases and Israel 86

The CDC has said that fully vaxxed people can mostly go maskless outside except in crowded groups.

But how do you know who's fully vaxxed?

If you ask someone why they aren't wearing a mask, they will forcefully tell you so while spraying you with droplets.

It might even be true here.

Everyone can go maskless outdoors except in crowds. It’s incredibly low risk. I don’t know why the CDC has added the fully vaxxed qualifier

The problem they have is that the discourse here has become so poisoned by culture wars that they are rightfully concerned that any kind of nuanced advice that speaks in terms of actual risks will be distorted and used against them.

All of which leads them to be extremely cautious in their guidance.

Even this will be interpreted by some as giving carte blanche to the operators of lazy river bars in the Ozarks that serve a thousand people at a time.

While I understand that the risk is pretty damn minimal, I'm not sure that I really approve of CDC messaging like this. Wearing masks outdoors negatively impacts almost nobody, and a substantial fraction of Americans have already demonstrated that they can't take deaths of hundreds of thousands of other Americans seriously.
Also, as a general comment on CDC guidance, this is the same CDC that has singularly failed to control a disease that has claimed roughly 600,000 American lives in the past year.

I'm sure that isn't their intention, but even more sure that it will be used that way by wingnuts

LAs are now advertising for "Covid Marshalls" to be taken on from 2021-07-01 to 2022-01-01 following end of lockdown

                                                (Various sources, Google refers)

                                                ?10-?11 ph, apparently.

Ideal for the interfering busybody with time on their hands or musicians who can't tour Europe and are strapped for cash, presumably?

Nepal has seen a more than 200% increase in new cases of Covid-19 in the last week and a more than 100% increase in deaths over the same period. Covid-19 has also been recorded in a tourist and a sherpa on Mount Everest.

                                                  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56854986.amp

This could be bad. Nepal is very poor (GDP per capita of just over 1,000 USD per year) and doesn't have great health infrastructure. Tourism surrounding mount Everest and other mountain climbing forms a big part of the country's income, so it may end up dealing with a Covid surge and a lack of income at the same time.

It's so disheartening that Indian states are only just now imposing lockdowns, and they don't seem particularly serious about it even now, when the health systems are already overwhelmed. Punjab's daytime lockdown only applies at weekends. Goa's lockdown is going to last all of four days. Delhi's is being extended on a week-by-week basis. I realise that many, many Indians are not well placed to manage financially in a lockdown, but the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.
