According to the opening of the BBC special news thing this is being done to prevent a predicted death rate of 4000 people a day. And the BBC are calling it lockdown regardless of how it's briefed.

The absolute dumbasses have missed the 2 week half term* window which would have helped their Tier 4 efforts. But of course I was 2 weeks so that all the middle class Tories who missed out on their summer hols could take a much needed foreign sun break. And a lockdown would have knocked that on the head.

*not sure if this was everywhere but it was in Shrewsbury and holidays was the reason according to my SiL.
