14,380 confirmed cases, 304 deaths, 10 outside Hubei province, 1 outside China (the Philippines, a 44-year-old Chinese man who had travelled from Wuhan).
Hubei has suspended the issuing of marriage licences to restrict gatherings.
Medical workers in Hong Kong are threatening to go on strike unless the border with the mainland is closed.
More countries are evacuating their nationals. India flew 300 home, Germany flew 100 home. Another 11 Britons managed to get on a French flight and will join the others in quarantine.
24 countries outside China have reported cases.
Lots of closed borders and cancelled flights.
Reports that the first doctor who tried to raise the alarm in December was arrested for "spreading rumours".
3rd Feb numbers update: over 17,200 cases, 362 deaths (361 in, and 1 outside, China).
As I understand it the fatality rate could be significantly higher than that apparent rate of just over 2 per cent on the basis that many of those cases could turn fatal, or could be significantly lower on the basis that there might be many cases which have gone undetected due to symptoms being so mild. Of course that latter possibility is double-edged: great if the chances of death or serious harm are smaller, but not so great if the infection rate is higher than appears and cases are more difficult to spot.
It's more the practise of having the abattoir at the point of sale that is suspected of being a cause of the virus. Having lots of live animals packed together in a market in less than sanitary conditions and then slaughtered right before sale is a recipe for viruses jumping between species.
That shouldn’t exist for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with this. And “the west’s” treatment of animals isn’t a lot better, really.
I think the most troubling number on that worldometer site is the low number of people who have recovered from it. The number of deaths is not that high compared with number of known infections, but only about twice that number have recovered, which mans that the vast majority of cases are still suffering from it.
I see the Uk government has advised all its citizens to leave China. This is of course the most monumentally arse covering bollocks ever. They know full well that the vast majority of Uk citizens in China will not be in a position to take leave or afford high priced tickets to fly out, so they get to wash their hands of any responsibility when inevitably a UK national in China dies in the next week or so. "Look, we advised them to leave, it's on them". Plus of course they will presumably withdraw consular support.
Mind you it's not quite that bad as that time when they advised me and other British citizens in the occupied territories to leave just before the invasion of Iraq. "We're about to massacre a whole bunch of Arabs, so other Arabs might have a grudge against the British, and therefore you should probably leave. If anything happens to you there will be no support from your embassy or government". Thanks, cunts. You could try not launching the war in the first place. Thought of that?
People may have read of the cruise ship that has been quarantined off of Yokohama after an 80 year old Hong Kong resident on board tested positive for the virus.
The 250+ passengers and crew that had the closest contact with him have now been tested, and of the first 31 results to be reported, ten were positive.
The entire ship has been quarantined for another two weeks, with additional tests being planned.
The cruise ship where 6,000 people were put in quarantine outside Rome, the suspected patient tested negative for coronavirus. But there's the one outside Yokohama that ursus mentioned and another ship with 1,800 passengers outside Hong Kong which is being tested.
