I've got a bad feeling about the mood surrounding the enforced lockdowns, and the Manchester standoff. It just feels like that tinderbox moment in 2010, was it, that all began as a protest about police handling of an incident but then really wasn't about that and just became a release valve for a week of rioting and looting.

Personally, I didn't really see much rioting because I was living off green lanes then and all the local Turkish guys just stood outside their shops, very quietly, and very pointedly holding baseball bats, so all the rioters veered off towards Tottenham. I did hear some sort of explosion at, I think it was a Tottenham recycling plant.

One big difference is that was in the middle of an August heatwave. Far too cold to sustain much rioting currently.

Romania's numbers of new cases jump each week (usually Wednesday's figures, which represent Tuesday's numbers) are the big leap, and today is no exception - 4848 as compared with 4016 a week ago and just under 3000 the previous week. I can;t see these numbers coming under control anytime soon. there appears to be zero effort to do test and trace, and other measures are being partly ignored. This county has just announced that masks must be worn in all public spaces, including outside. Hope this makes a difference
There is almost no-one I know round here that hasn't been affected. Loads of friends or family members of friends have been in hospital. And hospital sounds grim, so a lot of people with mild symptoms are not even bothering to get tested, so try and avoid being pressured to go in. The numbers must be at least 5 times the official ones.

Slovakia did really well in the early phase of this - almost too well to be true - but cases are likewise going up alarmingly again. Restaurant/bar interiors are now closed, as are secondary schools and universities. All football bar the top division has stopped, and the top division is behind closed doors.
The government's latest plan is to give the entire population a free antigen test over three weekends, starting this weekend in some of the worst affected regions. There are shades here of the Sunday work in Orwell's Animal Farm (strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself was put on half rations) in that the test is free and optional, but if you don't have it, you'll have to self-isolate. It will be carried out at polling stations, with people given a time-slot according to where their names fall in the alphabet. It doesn't seem a terrible idea in essence, but could well be one huge logistical nightmare. I'm also wondering what will happen if, say one in eight people are found to be infected, which some estimates say could be the case.
