We had a good couple of days, but then on Thursday evening we got a phone call. On Sunday last week, my other half had take up the offer of a lift with a friend to her home town as she had to do a few tasks related to the apartment where her parents lived, and which we still own. He was going there with his 9 year old son, and she tagged along, spend the day doing things and then a got a lift home in the evening. She was in the car with him, for getting on for 6 hours. On Tuesday evening he started developing symptoms and then on Wednesday was tested and Thursday admitted to hospital with a confirmed case. So, we're now home, having driven here all day yesterday, so we could be at home and self isolate. Given the exposure that Erika had, it seems hard to imagine that she won't have caught it, and as a result me and our two daughters are almost certainly going to have caught it too. It seems from what we know that symptoms start to appear between 3-8 days after exposure, so we're assuming that if she doesn't show symptoms by Monday she probably won't (either because she hasn;t caught it or because she's asymptomatic). Then me and the girls will probably wait until around Thursday to start relaxing a bit.

It;s a very weird feeling this sense of assuming that I have a virus which could be utterly debilitating or worse and waiting to start feeling it take effect.

(The friend is still in hospital, not in ICU, not with any breathing difficulties but feeling incredibly weak).

Obviously hoping that you and your family have either dodged the bullet or get incredibly mild doses of the virus, AH.

Was your partner wearing a mask during the car journeys?

No. Nobody was. We don't really have a bubble system here but as much as anyone is in our bubble it is this friend and his family. We just got careless I think

That's a pity. Fingers crossed then. The vast majority of people who catch the virus have little or no symptoms, so the odds are on your side.

Best wishes Ad Hoc, just went round to my local shop to pick up the groceries. They've been very good previously about social distancing and mask wearing but they've obviously given up, place was full of teenagers and early twenty somethings, the current Covid radioactive section of the population, on both sides of the counter. I was the only one wearing a mask.

Some quite interesting stats from the UK Biobank survey: https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/2020/07/...atest-updates/

Overall, 7.1% of people showed they had been infected previously....

And very best wishes, ad hoc

It's maddening. Would people have been more compliant if more people got it in March/April? And if the govt had pushed a clear line on masks earlier. The whole "it's not bad for young people/it's just like the flu/everyone will get it anyway" attitude seems prevelant and it's really worrying.

in other good news, the Dept of Public Expenditure is pivoting away from Remote working and toward getting folk (including high risk!) civil servants back into the office. At the same time the buses and trains will be full of wee scrotes going to school. Lovely stuff.

The Lombard and NYC response supports the conclusion that particularly hard hit areas take the pandemic more seriously and are better at complying with directives.

Though there are still signs of fatigue even in those areas, which are exacerbated by it now being summer.

Good luck, ad hoc. I think Jimski is right about exposure not necessarily leading to infection. But get tested if you can.

Some anecdotal evidence on the state of covid awareness that I shall dignify as ethnomethodological, I went out for my neighbour's paper this morning then went for a run along the canal bank. On my rounds, I must have encountered 30 or so people, ranging from primary age children to folks in their 60s/70s. Male, female, white, asian, biracial (I'm guessing here), shopping, cycling, waking, fishing, socialising, dog walking... Not a single one of them made the slightest effort at social distancing, deviating from their chosen course by so much as a degree. When I made space, only 2 (older man, mum with family on bikes) offered any acknowledgement whatsoever. I don't know whether that would be lack of manners or sharing the general lack of awareness that we're sliding into a second death spiral.

hobbes - Yep. That's entitled modern parenting for you. Already wondering if I made the right decision to re-start teaching. Hope your cub stays safe.

All the best AH. The odds are with you, hope you're all ok.

People look at me like I've got two heads if I stand out their way on a path. It's the mask free no sense of distancing bastards in supermarkets that really horrify me tho, I don't really fear getting it outside.

Ursus, the Berliners in that video all seem to be white.

                                        Not terribly surprising, is it?

I would expect that most of them are from out of town, as well.

Ireland now averaging 44 Covid cases per day, though thankfully they seem to be milder than previously, as deaths have been reduced almost to zero, and only four cases currently require ICU.

Well the majority of cases are now aged under 45. Let's see what happens when they infect their parents and grandparents.

18 new confirmed cases in Scotland in the last 24 hours, but no confirmed deaths from Covid for the 16th day in a row.
260 people in hospital with Covid as of Friday evening, but just 3 of those are in ICU.

Hopefully none of you get it and if you do, it's a mild experience, ad hoc.
