The Diamond Princess is running a total of 218 cases out of 700 tested so far, or roughly 31%.

Hmm, it now seems that SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus while Covid-19 is the name of the disease it causes, because that's not confusing at all...

So this sign was up in my GP surgery's waiting room today. Can anyone see anything wrong with it?

It's not clear if it is the same report in which they cut their estimate of First Quarter GDP growth to 1 percent (from a pre-outbreak estimate of over 6)

Well the sign appears to be in the practice, so telling people not to come in seems a bit pointless.

Beijing has ordered people returning to the city from holidays to quarantine themselves for 14 days to try to contain the coronavirus spread, as the death toll in China from the outbreak passed 1,500.

On Saturday, the country’s National Health Commission said 2,641 new cases were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed infections across mainland China to 66,492. There were also 143 deaths in the 24 hours to midnight on Friday, taking total fatalities from the virus to 1,523.
The US is reportedly preparing to evacuate its nationals from the Diamond Princess, which will likely put pressure on other rich countries to do the same,

My GP practice had the foresight to send a text rather than wait for people to turn up at the surgery, but there are still some problems with the message:

If you have flu-like symptoms and/or have recently visited China, Asia, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau or may have come into contact with someone potentially affected by Coronavirus. Please do not attend the surgery. Please self-isolate at home and call 111 for gu
*That "gu" at the end there is them, not me, truncating the message.

If they'd just said Asia, rather than Asia and a number of countries which are in Asia, they may have had the space left to finish the sentence. Gunpowder? Gummy bears? Guardian subscription? Gusset? Guitar strings?

Gummy bears, must be gummy bears. Everyone* should call 111 for gummy bears.

*Kids**, please don't call 111 for gummy bears.

                                **Adults, knock yourself out.

Message from my GP on 31st January said:

"If you or a family member have flown back from China in the last 2 weeks and you feel unwell with flu-like symptoms, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND THE SURGERY. Please stay at home and call us on 01xxx xxxxxxx. Tell the care navigator you have returned from China and a GP will call you with further instructions. Thank you for your cooperation."

Anyone heard of a "care navigator" before?? Is this just a new word for GP receptionist?

                                    Care navigation

Effective navigation is important to providing coordinated person-centred care and support. Care navigation is an emerging idea in the UK, with a growing evidence demonstrating benefits for patients and carers.Care navigators can occupy many roles and play a crucial part in helping people get the right support, at the right time, to help manage a wide range of needs.

We have developed a three tiered care navigation competency framework (PDF 308.77kb), which describes the core competencies for people providing care navigation across a wide range of health, social and voluntary care sectors.

The framework was informed by many perspectives, from different organisations across the UK and recognises three successive levels; essential, enhanced and expert.

The framework can help provide a 'common language' and coherent approach to providing care navigation, and help ensure relevant staff receive necessary education, training and support to work effectively.

This may be used by employers, education providers, individuals and commissioners to inform education and training needs and provision.

At a GP surgery, care navigators are basically receptionists, but surgeries now employing GPs, nurses, ANPs (nurses who can prescibe) UCPs (usually former paramedics), physicians associates, physics, podiatrists, psychologists, social prescribers, health care assistants etc. So a) it's a recognition that receptionist work is more complicated and b) hopefully it will encourage people who are making an appointment to tell the receptionist/care navigators their symptoms which makes it more likely that people get seen as and when they need.

                                            16th February update:

69,290 cases, 1,671 deaths. Almost 10% of the passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess have tested positive now. The US plans to evacuate 400 of its citizens who are on board and then place them in a further two weeks of quarantine back home.

It's over a third of the passengers who have been tested, as they are still in the process of getting to everyone.

44 of the confirmed cases are US nationals, who will be treated in Japan rather than being repatriated

Not really coronavirus related, but if we're talking Asian economic gloom, Japan's GDP fell over 6% in 4Q19.
