    Poll: Irish general election edition

With speculation mounting that the Taoiseach could go to the Áras as early as Monday, worth seeing how the OTF collective would cast ballots here - potted descriptions here for non-Irish posters:

Solidarity is the Ruth Coppinger/Joe Higgins mob. Socialist party, so Militant really.

Thinking back, there wasn't much of a split in Ireland was there? Pretty much the whole group stayed together, I think. They just don't have as many friends in England & Wales as before.

I'm not aware of any micro Millie group in Ireland, maybe before my time though.

Of course smug cunt Paul Murphy has split off from Solidarity now to lead his own ego into battle.

Indeed - effectively the rump Dick Spring evicted from Labour in 1991 for Solidarity, and PBP evolved from the Socialist Workers Party.

In fairness, it's a lot more difficult to organise an Irish poll because of proportional representation, I'm going to give my number one to a strong local worker who's probably giving it his final attempt, other than that I'll have a look at the field closer in, none of the three current TDs fill me with joy.

The same question I ask at every Southern election. Is there any possibility of changing to equal size constituencies- so that each elects 5 TDs, say?

Is Paul Murphy still calling himself RISE?

Of course their is ,but gerrymandering rules. Every party benefits from it.

Not as long as constituencies have to follow county boundaries as much as possible - of course, Leitrim is the perennial victim in such discussions.

Both generally and specifically, how do all the smaller parties benefit? Difference between a 5- and 3- seater is only needing 17% support for a quota rather than 25%. Even with transfers that extra 8% makes things very difficult

Many of your constituencies already cross county lines in practice, so why not more of them in principle if it effects other improvements as below? Leitrim isn't a 'victim' of its small population, it just has to accept sharing an area with the bigger Sligo

                                Variously,

1 Electoral areas should be of similar population, with in multi-member area systems the same number elected in each. It's fairer to the parties/ candidates without particularly inconveniencing local traditions etc. Essentially- if the thing's worth doing, do it properly

2 Gerrymandering (as mentioned above by elguapo) has been a constant theme in Irish political argument for a century. In practice it's used, particularly by NI Nationalists as a shorthand for 'anything the Brits or Prods do that we don't like'. All good knockabout stuff, but when the South's system is so blase as EG says there's a clear suggestion of hypocrisy

The Taoiseach has decided when the election will be held, but it seems that he will only announce it in the Dáil on Wednesday.

Why would you do that? It makes no sense.

I'm not disagreeing - I haven't thought about it anything like enough, nor as much as you have. It just isn't obvious to me why that should be the case - in what way is it fairer to the parties and candidates?

(Incidentally, I have no idea if I could make myself vote for any of the parties listed)

TT- it's fairer for the reason I mentioned. Smaller parties are more likely to be elected and thus the overall range of parties represented to be more proportionate to their vote share.

Currently, one constituency has more than 150,00 electors, another fewer than 60,000.This is clearly suggestive of gerrymandering and potentially other abuses.

That would make it "fairer" for them all to be bigger, though, rather than for them all to be the same size.
