The states are desperate for revenue and terrified of raising taxes

The same dynamic played out with regard to alcohol, lotteries and casino gambling.

Now it is the turn of recreational drugs and sports betting.

It is just interesting how (in my experimental youth) the prohibition and penal approach of the US was always at the fore-front of chat about how we bended the rules a little, but weren't being as bad (as them in the US).

Mind you, back when I was a kid the whole tale was you would get a ticket for going a mile over (insert stupid highway limit) 55. Yet I have never got stopped for speeding yet and I rarely adhere to limits.

So - and I think this will help a lot of posters of the gen X/Y time - has it all changed since our folks in the late 80's/90's, or was it all just part of a wonderful international fiction?

I always wondered about what seemed to be ridiculously low US speed limits. Are some states more proactive in issuing fines?

This is a much more complicated question than you may realise.

Some local jurisdictions fund themselves through the operation of "speed traps" designed to catch out travelers who are convinced to pay a fine of a few hundred dollars rather than having their cars impounded or spending a night in jail before a "trial".

There are also federal limits on maximum speeds that are tied to federal highway funding, on which they all rely. These were first introduced at the time of the first oil shock to save both fuel and lives, but have always been massively contentious in the sparsely populated West. Sammy Hagar got a US hit out of that backlash, and the maximums have been increased fro 55 mph to 75 or 80.

The speed limit on surface streets in NYC has been 25 mph for a couple of years, but is woefully underenforced.

When considering US speed limits, it is important to remember that it is easier to get a licence here then in any other developed country (and at a younger age). And that MOT-type standards, where they exist, allow many vehicles on the road that would be barred elsewhere. Not to mention the higher limits and relative lack of enforcement of laws against driving while impaired.

These days the speed limits out in the non-California west are often 80mph, which is more than fast enough, really.

I’m never really sure how strict enforcement is at the low end. I think generally traffic cops wait for people going more than 10mph over the limit (or maybe 15, depending on jurisdiction) because the fines are much bigger.

This place was (and may still be) infamous in Texas, but it wasn't the only one:

Texas Monthly could publish a book length anthology of pieces on two bit rural sheriffs' reigns of terror
