Does the UK really spell narc with a "k"?

        Yes
        nark noun [C] (CRIMINAL)

        UK slang
a person, especially a criminal, who gives the police information about other criminals:
        a coppers' nark

It feels like it's a different word entirely, now.

Nark = grass, more or less, no?

              Yes.

"Narc" instantly makes me thing "drugs cop".

                Quite

It appears to be a snitch, stoolie, informant, etc

Whereas the North American verb form is a mashup of the two meanings with its origins in undercover drug cops

                Curious

Yeah, I'd say they were kind of different words. The cartoon only makes sense if the cat is calling the kid a grass (as opposed to a drug cop)

There's also "narky" meaning grumpy/nagging/petty and "narked" meaning irritated.

Also "norks" which are other things entirely.

                        And "nerk" - a fool.

I think this is maybe a bit more than irreverent. Just in case the link is not direct, it's Hitler and Stalin singing the Buggles...

That was the first, and most frequent usage, I remember as a kid.
