    The Marshall Islands

I don;t know where to put this, but think it deserves its own thread

From beginning to end this is an utter disgrace and an appalling story. From the nuclear testing itself to the dumping of the highly radioactive waste to the abdication of responsibility. I guess these kind of things shouldn't continue to shock me, but they still do. I'm sickened just from reading this

(Just to give you a taster:
“Data of this type [the effects of radiation on people] has never been available,” Merrill Eisenbud, a U.S official with the Atomic Energy Commission, said at a January 1956 meeting of the agency’s Biology and Medicine Committee. “While it is true that these people do not live the way that Westerners do, civilized people, it is nonetheless also true that they are more like us than the mice.” )

Thanks for that link ad hoc. The Marshalese have been lied to since they were evacuated from Bikini atoll in the early 50s. I have a copy of Life from that period where their "chief" is quoted about their distress at being forced to leave, but also the assurances they'd received that they'd be able to return "soon."

        What cunts they are

American officials have declined, saying the dome is on Marshallese land and therefore the responsibility of the Marshallese government.
        thanks for link, ad hoc

Thanks for posting that ad hoc. I knew many of the main points about the sickening abuse of the islanders by the US military from other sources already (e.g from this John Pilger documentary, the first part of which is almost entirely about the Marhsall Islands: http://johnpilger.com/videos/the-coming-war-on-china), but I hadn't known about the Rumit Dome.

We could spare a few billion to fix it. It’s the least we could do.

My friend recently worked in the Marshall Islands - she was there for over a year installing a data capture system at the airport. She made no mention of this, which suggests that it's not very well-known on the island itself. It's an absolute disgrace.

Let's see if anything changes. I doubt it.

Continuing effects of the testing felt in Iowa. Sad piece but worth reading. https://www.politico.com/news/magazi...edicaid-103940

                        Odd and bizarre then
Last night's dream was all about having been cast back in time to witness the USA's atom bomb tests in Arizona in the 1950s

Except of course, they didn't have a nuclear test range in Arizona

And the set-dresser for my dream came onto stage to rail against the fact the store had a poppy appeal tray on the counter

There wouldn't have been one in America
