    Dog adoption

It's Emily's third anniversary today. Or, as they are apparently known, her Gotcha Day. Here she is in an Hermes-style bandana for Christmas Day:

Nice one Sits - she looks lovely. In addition to my post from 2 years ago, a second rescue dog is now snoring away next to me as I write this. Tilly is a staffie/lab cross (size of a lab, colouring of a staffie) who we got about 15 months ago and is now nearly 11 years old. Her and Ted get on brilliantly, even though she is a lot fitter, faster and stronger than the old chap, they share everything together and she never bullies him, which is great.

Ted was put to sleep today. His arthritis had become worse in his bag legs, which meant that he was putting pressure onto one of his front legs which made this tender. He was struggling to walk and to add to this he had a heart murmer as well. He was on tablets to relieve the pain and whilst I could have put him on more tablets, there comes a point where quality of life becomes important.

While I know that I've done the right thing by the old lad, I am absolutely heart-broken and devastated.

Foxy, you have my condolences. There's nothing like the place a dog takes in your life, and nothing like the loss. You'll never forget him, but the memory will soften, gradually become less painful, and in a year, or maybe more, it will only be good.

What you did for him in his last few years was a wonderful gift, to yourselves and to him.

Sorry to hear this, nmr. As Sits and MsD have already said, you did a great thing for him. You'll come to enjoy the memories, trust me.

I have a slightly heavy heart, as my foster cat's mum has been to visit this morning, and she definitely wants him back in June.

He's quite bonded to me and to my other (adopted) cat. Oh well, he's not mine.

He hid under the bed from her, like any self-respecting cat would. It's been four months.

Sorry to hear that MsD. At least try and enjoy the remaining 3 months with your fostered cat and you never know, the cats mum may change her mind in the intervening time (fingers crossed).

Really sad news nmrfox. Sorry to hear that.

We have a cat with arthritis and I know we'll have to go through the same process quite soon. He was a stray we adopted as a kitten and he's mellowed from being an absolute psycho to socialised cat and now grumpy old feller. We had our other (ancient) cat put down last summer and I can't quite face going through it again just yet.

Me and my daughter were really keen to get a dog but everyone told us it was too big a commitment so the wife, a cat lover, won out and we got 2 new kittens instead. The older arthritic cat - after initially being quite friendly to them - has started hissing at them and I wonder if it's them being annoying or if he's in discomfort.

Thanks :-) at least whatever happens, he will be loved and cared for, but ...

Sniff . They make such a sweet pair, when he's not pinning her down and "playing" with her head.

(My bold highlight) - he's not anyone's. It's why he hid, he wants to exercise his choice. That's a shame MsD, but as you say he'll be happy. Don't be surprised if another cat "adopts" you out of the blue. It just seems to happen to the right people. A friend of mine in Cornwall currently has about six, three of which adopted him.

Very sad to hear this nmr, my condolences. I dread the inevitable day this happens to us. Certainly sounds like you did the right thing - their lives are relatively short and we just have to enjoy them, and keep them as happy and healthy as we can.

To Sits: Yes, I wish he could choose, but I hope they will rebuild the bond when she takes him back and that she will take on board what I've said about him loving company. The smaller tabby found me (and my old, now deceased, cat) and is staying now. I have another that stops by once a day.

Sorry, derailing the dog thread again.

This is going to sound extremely pinickety but when did dog and cat ownership become 'adoption'? I mean, I have 'adopted' animals in zoos so I am not criticising anyone and certainly not the people on here who have taken dogs and cats on that need homes.

I am just wondering when and why the terminology changed.

                                                    Dog adoption

When you take on an animal from a rescue you pay what's called an adoption fee which covers costs for vaccinations, microchipping, neutering etc so I guess that's where the adopting may have come from.
