They are worth quite a lot to those they spin for. The bbc is still seen internationally anyway as a guarantee of good journalism

I appreciate the sentiment but that image is far too disturbing to post in that form, and the embedded video is going to keep me awake at night. I don't want an image of misogynist violence, with the victim fearing for her life, on my screen.

                  Jesus Christ.

My rudimentary understanding of these South American countries is that the problem isn’t that they’re “socialist,” but that they’re way too dependent on the price of oil. Dutch disease and all that.

That's less true of Bolivia, but certainly is of Venezuela.

Anyway, it's been instructive watching some of our finest liberal minds making apologetics for this coup, and in some cases using it for the far more important task of "owning" Corbyn-supporters on the internet. And I wonder whether it has any connection with the growing performative reverence for the military that has gripped Britain in the past decade. I've seen liberal commentators "quip" that perhaps we should have a military coup "to save us from this shitshow".

And it makes you realise that, if push came to shove, an awful lot of people who claim to support democracy would happily shelve it to see off a "disruptive" outsider. As the old saying goes, "washing one's hands of the struggle between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful".

Also, the absolutely racist connotations of this coup are unmistakable. The indigenous flags being hauled down and what have you. These people don't want shorter, darker types anywhere near power.

Echoes of Chile 1973 are very strong and yet it seems the centre no longer finds that a problem. Pinochet would get the red carpet if he were around now and the anti-Corbyns would equivocate rather than uniting with the protests.

Obviously the Tory press are going to lap up all fascist dictators unless they do something nasty to a British colonial backwater/anachronism.

Isn't this a bit more problematic that this though? I mean there's a lot of alarm bells ringing here. Introducing a constitution that mandates two terms for the president, which is fine up until the time the incumbent wants a fourth term.. An election so incredibly dodgy that it could be seen from space, and surrounded with enough irregularities to make anyone's heart sink. None of this is good. It was bad when it happened in Venezuela, it's bad when it happens the other way around. At what time does one look at a situation and think, perhaps one should be careful about what side you are taking.

Well, yes... you, for instance should be more careful not to seem too pleased about Bolivia being taken over by racist death squads. Nobody likes a gloater.

He offered a rerun of the elections; the military's response was to tell him to resign.

There seems to be an awful lot of argument about whether this was a coup or not. The people who say it wasn't point to Morales' shady behavior and violence by people on "his side." The people who say he was seem to think that authoritarian regimes are ok as long as they're socialist. That's, umm, a bit problematic, in my opinion.

But that doesn't mean it wasn't a coup. If he was forced out by threat of violence, that's a coup. More importantly, there's no reason to assume that what replaces him will be better. Indeed, there's probably good reason to think it won't be.

I tell you what, Morales must be the shittest, weakest authoritarian in history if, after all this time, he hasn't even stuffed the police and army with his placemen. Which this week's events clearly demonstrate he hasn't.

He will be replaced with some sort of racist kleptocrat, because that's one of the drivers of all this.

In the meantime, as western liberals do their usual "faults on both sides - aren't the Left stupid for being partisan" fence-sit, Trump and Bolsanaro are absolutely thrilled.

                                        That is a good point.

Either way, it doesn't look like this will be resolved constitutionally and that is a tragedy.

How has Bolivia fared economically in the last twenty years or so? When I visited in 2002, it was by far the poorest country I had visited up to that date (though at that point I hadn't ventured outside Europe and Russia).

Most say it’s been doing pretty well especially for the poorest and indigenous people
