The Sterling/Euro conversion rate rose to EUR 1.20 on the day of the election and has now fallen to EUR 1.17. It was at EUR 1.18 two days before the election and EUR 1.17 at the start of the month. Other than in the week or so before the GE, EUR 1.17 is as high as it's traded in the previous 12 months. It's hardly in freefall. It's reverted to the point of it's pre-election yearly high.

Just to illustrate the fact that the verbal and physical abuse of candidates and their supporters was across the board: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-50852381

that article oddly seems to omit the physical attacks which resulted In hospitalisation on two elderly Labour campaigners

"Oddly"? It's not a comprehensive list of all incidents during the campaign.

The BBC covered the two assaults you referred to: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50560366 & https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50552115

When the main outrage in Belfast North is the winning candidate and current mayor being caught having a slash in the alley beside his city centre office maybe things have actually got gentler this century?

Apart from paramilitaries having a quiet word, encouraging one political party to stand down on behalf of the other.

Fair point. I've set the outrage bar too high there (as did the local media, although 'Bits Out' did offer comedy relief SWIDT )

My recent hanging out in draughty Churches and sports halls at 5am was almost always well behaved. Worst sulk was a Labour loser accusing his Tory rival of forgetting to namecheck her predecessor (kicked out by Johnson)

So much so, that Arlene has gone into overdrive!

Labour increased their vote share in 15 seats out of 632 contested.

Impossible. They should have been 20 points ahead in heavily Remain constituencies. Just ask the recently returned now independent MP Dominic Grieve.

                        (I'll stop now.)

I haven't had the heart to post about the election until now. Being out of the country on a short break initially softened the impact, but since returning, the harsh reality has felt like a very nasty blow to the head.

The anger I felt initially with people not just across the country, but specifically in the North East still hasn't fully subsided. I should have seen it coming with the opinionated, bigoted, Brexit loving cretins that I have come across in the last year (the silly twat who asked me if the local library would reinstate buying The Sun newspaper because of the Tory majority is a case in point). I feel anger that so many people have voted themselves into a potential black hole.

However, the majority of people in the constituencies where I work and live still overwhelmingly voted Labour despite the Tory swing. The majority of people in my area didn't want Boris and his cronies in power. The majority of people I come across are decent and caring. I have to remember this when I veer into generalisation about how the North East turned last Thursday. Not everybody did turn. Not everybody wants this shit.

So I'll try not to judge and keep helping the people and services who need it, because some individuals will need more help than ever now. I felt defeated last Thursday, but I won't walk away from a fight, however long it takes. I'm prepared for the long haul though.

This is a very good analysis by Adam Ramsay

Contrast that excellent piece with the vapidity of D Milliband's in the Observer today.

                                Very good indeed.

This is a decent podcast focusing on how Putin's supporters weaponised the tactic.

In this episode of Lawfare's Arbiters of Truth series, Alina Polyakova and Quinta Jurecic spoke with Peter Pomerantsev, a research fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and the author of "This is Not Propaganda: Adventures in the War Against Reality." The book explores how the nature of propaganda has shifted as authoritarian governments move from silencing dissent to drowning dissent out with squalls of disinformation. Pomerantsev argues that this transformation traces back to the cynicism and chaos in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, but now it's become all too familiar around the world.

Not only was it Corbyn's fault that Labour did so badly in the election, it appears that it was also his fault that the Lib-dems failed as well.

Like Steady Ed Davey, I too have identified the main cause of my party's failure.

Me. I mean I let my Tory opponent get 71% ffs
