I'm pretty sure that that picture is in the book. I remember the writing. The pictures in that book are fucking amazing. The one of Jerusalem in about 1860, and the whole place is ruins, with goats wandering around. There was only about 5,000 people living in jerusalem at the time.

I think perhaps the thing that most surprised me in that book was just the state that jerusalem was in for much of the last millennium. It's almost as though it was just any other city on the top of a mountain, with a severely limited water supply.
