I previously touted (don't write in) for the BBC head honcho gig in a Tubby Isaacs shadow cabinet. May do so again if the new King of the North EIM is up for it. My broadcasting CV includes

• regular appearances on 'You and Yours', Sky News etc representing the Football Supporters Association (when the media contacted HQ in Liverpool, they recommended the guy round the corner from Broadcasting House)
• highlights included a very hungover vox pop after some Norwegian fcukwit set fire to the beer tent at Euro 92, and being told by Kirsty Wark "You'll never work in fucking television again". No manners but what a critic etc.
• arguing with the MP for Wolves South West about cricket in a 2015 GE debate
• recommending a biography of Artemisia Gentilleschi to Radio 4 listeners
• very bad backing vocals on the London NISC's charity record before Euro 2016
• my school featured on Songs of Praise, 1974. We were all given a Gideon Bible

She's from round here. She is, or was, restaurant critic for the Guardian, and wrote a glowing review of the restaurant my son works at. I never had her down as a fascist sympathiser either.

I think she is/ was a comedian, I've seen her Guardian reviews and presume she must do something else to make money. Do benefit concerts for the far right pay that well?

She's not / never been a comedian. She's a general media type, columnist / broadcaster, one of those people who "rose without trace", becoming well known without being famous for one thing. I'm not attempting to defend her here by the way, just correcting any impression that she is a comedian. She has written a series of teen novels called "Diary of a Chav", so make of that what you will.

In general, I'd be interested to know where the money goes at The Guardian. Overall the paper seems to get ever thinner, while certain prominent but inessential opinion and feature writers seem to be cemented in place. As well as usually buying the print edition on Saturday, I still read the website quite a bit and so make a small monthly supporter payment. If there was an option to specify that it be directed towards actual reporting rather than punditry and lifestyle nonsense, it would be very tempting.

Grace Dent does restaurant reviews. I'd say that is proper journalism. I can't think of many journalistic reviews which are quite as directly useful on a day to day basis as restaurant reviews, in fact.

I'm not saying she is the most important writer of our times, but it's odd to hear things like she rose without trace. My guess is she's been writing on a national level for around 20 years now.
