It reminds me of the Falklands War, when flag-waving and cheerleading was ridiculously high.

The emergency here has demanded that the state extend its tentacles almost everywhere - managing the health crisis, propping up multiple industries, supporting the wages of nearly half of the working population and issuing instructions to us all on the way to live our lives.
Laura Kuennnsberg, BBC chief political correspondent being entirely neutral and not at all ideological

To have grown up in Glasgow in the 70s and 80s and still end up a tory cheerleader, you'd have to have a lack of empathy so complete it'd make your average sociopath blush.

                            I'm struggling to untangle this.

The best that I can do is that in the world of The Times' media correspondent, the Beeb is still a den of Stalinist propagandists.

He must not watch it either.

Authoritarians always demand greater control even when they already have almost total control already. However, the phrase " reset relations with government" is a particularly nauseous euphemism for sacrificing all independent thought to Big Brother.

For the avoidance of any doubt. I am sorry that by mistake I said on the news last night that @NicolaSturgeon was “enjoying the opportunity” to set lockdown policy in Scotland. That was not what I meant to say and I apologise to her for my error.
She is lying. It's exactly what she meant to say. She even admits it in the earlier Tweet.

"By mistake" obviously covers something legally - no idea what though. it's clearly libellous to suggest that a leader is enjoying the opportunity to impose restrictive legislation.

It's funny but I feel like I'm more informed about politics since I totally gave up watching the main televised news and political debate programmes produced by either BBC or ITV five and a bit months ago.

It was a drip drip process of alienation that started with Newsnight's inability to allow space for proper debates about complex issues. I can't abide the minuscule analysis after reports that doesn't really explain anything or the unnecessary editorialising in reports. The Kuenssberg - Robinson - Bradby - Peston axis of drivel nearly pushed me over the edge but the final straw was the interchangeable irritants that appear after BBC Breakfast's 7 am news. Not even the most depressing, sinister or cynical policy / idea subdued their "You don't need to be mad to work here but it helps" voices that present politics as one long jolly jape. I should add that the sensationalist patter of BBC Breakfast's education correspondent sets my teeth on edge.

Perhaps I should have written "less stressed" rather than "more informed" in the first sentence. In the split-second after finishing the above paragraph I started to question what I typed, is it a good thing to miss the news? I might still see the best and worst part of BBC news output on here or on social media but perhaps I'm missing something without the full context. On the other hand when I can't abide listening or watching and Private Eye may be far from perfect but at least going to pick it up gets me out of the house.

I think I went through that process with the Bush-Blair invasion with Iraq. Even Paxman seemed to avoid asking really tough questions, as opposed to the points scoring ones like whether they prayed together. The Tories have extended the BBC's lapdog status that started under Blair.

That story that the BBC chief political correspondence has been rebutting all evening isn’t very interesting apparently.
