I would like DM's advice. In Starbucks last week there was a young person wearing make up with the name tag Matthew. I'm pretty sure the name tag was their name tag. I wanted to compliment them on their look because the make up was very boldly done (bright red lipstick) and very well done. But I just wasn't sure how to say something without sounding like a patronising prick. I could use some pointers.

Easier for me to say "I love your lipstick" or "your lips look amazing", that's never got anything but a chuffed reaction. More complicated if you're a bloke. I'm not DM but I thought I'd chip in anyway :-)

Yeah generally if you're a bloke you wouldn't comment on a strangers lipstick (unless you were trying to chat her up/be a sex pest).

I have a question about the thread title: what's the spelling a reference to?

I always assumed that it was to stop arsehole terfy and otherwise nasty types finding this thread using search engines and piling on with the same tired and tiresome old whines that we’ve all heard and seen before, and disrupting the thread from being reasonable and positive and instead making it unpleasant and fighty like so much of the rest of the internet.

It's not all misery. This thread of fine cis people responding to superb journalist (not just on 'trans issues', on anything she writes about) Katelyn Burns' request has been giving me joy today - https://twitter.com/transscribe/status/1208201739087810566

I couldn't read the whole thread until today, and then there were just too many lovely comments to go through.

It's really heartening, and I'm glad you got to read it. I hope it reaches all the people it needs to. Sometimes social media is great. x

This is horrific, I've no other word for it. Puberty is a living hell for trans people. This is a simple and extremely important bodily autonomy issue.

I was reading about that earlier dm, truly awful. Hope it goes the right way, though if so there will be some horrible backlash publicity of course.

I try to imagine how much worse I'd have felt growing up if I'd known there was something I could do - something concrete, researched and evidence-based, as treatments for trans kids are - about what was happening and how I was feeling, but been prohibited from accessing it, and I just start screaming inside. It's like if you had anti-vax parents and wanted to get vaccinated, and they went to court to try and prevent it.

I have no experience of being teenage and trans, but I did benefit from being able to access contraception confidentially as a teenager. We used to refer to the women who ran the contraception clinic in Cambridge as the 'lovely, wobbly, randy old ladies' (Harry Enfield and Chums was popular at the time), because you only had to pop your head in the door and they would greet you with cheerful cries of 'I guess you'll be wanting condoms dear?'

They once took me through the whole questionnaire and process of issuing me with a morning after pill in ten minutes flat, because I had a very short window between the end of a Tai Chi class and catching my bus home where I wouldn't have to explain being late home to my mum. I sprinted there from the class, explained the urgency, answered 'no, no, no, no, no' to all the qualifying questions, necked the first pill and sprinted back to the bus.

They also broke the rules for me and issued me with extra condoms and an emergency morning after pill supply because I was going to be in South American countries, some of them heavily Catholic-influenced, for five months.

If we accept that the age for criminal responsibility in this country is 10 years old, we surely have to accept bodily autonomy from soon after that age as well?

A year later, he gets married. Shreveport Times, June 12, 1957:

Nice detailed takedown of the appalling LGB Alliance. Particularly interested in their director's deeply nasty comments on LGBT clubs in schools. Yet again, the link between faux-progressive anti-trans groups and conservative LGBT-phobes is clear - as I've said before, the American religious right has been quite clear that, following losing the day on same sex marriage, it is focusing on trans people as a wedge issue to attack LGBT people in general.

Also, I need to talk about South Dakota but I need to gather my strength first because what is going on in South Dakota is hideous (vicious proposed legislation directly aimed at stopping trans kids getting any kind of treatment).

It almost makes me cry what's happened in Scotland. This stuff has festered down here for years, but north of the border it seems to be a pretty new development, deliberately pushed by the gruesomes (ditto Ireland, where it's worth recalling that self-ID was introduced a few years ago and to my knowledge with no issues whatsoever).

Yeah, it's fucked. SNP reps like Joan McAlpine and Joanna Cherry have become poison over this (and their tacit defence of Salmond, and anti-semites like Neal Hanvey).
