Important to put pressure here (in the EU) as the EU-Mercosur FTA is yet to be agreed by all national/regional parliaments. Remember CETA...

The perfect storm of fascism and capitalism. Bolsanaro is the very worst of the new arc of cuntery (spanning Modi, Netanyahu, Erdogan, Salvini, Orban, Johnson, Trump and co)

Don't forget toxic fundamentalism and overt racism

Leo claims he will use his veto - more cynically, the lobbying from Irish beef farmers may have had more influence.

The environmental catastrophe is bad, but not as bad as the incipient genocide. I wish that were given a higher profile.

Brendan O'Neill has been replaced by an automated script, I presume?

The automated script requires no oxygen and can function in temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius

Oh, well, that's OK then. Let's burn it down.

Yes, I did. I don't really understand the point of it.

It certainly reads like those articles that start with "I'm not saying climate change isn't happening, but..." and then proceed to spend pages and pages contradicting a rhetorical flourish of a campaigner. The goal of which is to discredit the broad thrust of the campaign.

Interesting article, Bruno. Thanks for posting the link.

TBH, I don't really think of the Amazon as an oxygen generator, more of a carbon sponge and a rich source of biodiversity, both of which the burning does threaten, of course.

The burning also threatens actual humans, the communities that live in the Amazon, who've long been treated disgustingly. And who have frequently been total non-people in this debate, which is framed as Bolsanaro v Macron, rather than Bolsanoro v much of his own country

The Amazon also essential for creating the water resources that Brazil depends on. Its going to be a huge disaster for Brazil, let alone the rest of the world, if and when they turn it into a Savannah, which appears to be inevitable now.

I went to high school with this guy. He's doing what he can to help the people who actually live in the Amazon.

Incidentally, his dad is the computer scientist that did a lot of the work to sort out the genome of the wooly mammoth.
