But, with the passport, what's the upside. Can you actually use an expired passport for anything? Why not just burn it?

It can be significantly easier to renew an expired passport than to apply for a new one.

But there is clearly more going on with his penchant for keeping incriminating evidence.

Don't some people have one passport they use to visit Israel and another to visit Arab countries? Isn't that a thing?

Doesn't explain the fake name or address, of course, and given that it's Epstein, it's shady AF by default. I bet trump is jealous of how shady Epstein is.

The whole set of criminal deeds has become a thrill for him so his cache is part of that pleasure?

He's no charles augustus milverton is he? Maybe it's a trophy and the passport originally belonged to on of his first kills?

Just spent an enjoyable twenty minutes reading about Charles Augustus Milverton. Had never heard of him despite reading quite a lot of Sherlock Holmes when I was younger.

I'm not at all convinced that he is primarily a blackmailer and he certainly is not a Milverton.

FF, that is definitely a thing, but usually done with two passports from the same country. State will issue duplicates to those establishing a real need (casual visitors will have other means available).

Bringing this up at the bail hearing is a clear attempt by the SDNY to establish his risk of flight, though it is hard to judge whether that was the primary purpose of the passport or not.

Satchmo, my guess is that is part of it, but likely not all of it. I am also partial to Berbaslug's focus on his sense of impunity.

Someone serious has to be working on the William Jefferson Clinton angle here. The trips on Epstein's jet documented in the flight logs go well beyond the incidental.

Isn't that one particularly bad for the whole business of holmes gets a case, then fucks off for 3 weeks, then one day watson is in his rooms and a little old lady comes in pushing herself along on a trolley like eddie murphy in trading places, she's only three feet tall, lost her legs to a pike or something simliar, and feeble as fuck, watson turns around, and when he looks back there's holmes looming over him, telling him they need to go and commit a crime somewhere..... and then you hear some of the details later, like him getting engaged to the parlour maid.

Or did conan doyle have his conventional narrative structure hat on for this one? Siegfried from All creatures great and small was absolutely brilliant as milverton in the Brett adaptation. That one is well worth looking for.

Ursus how did he get caught the first time, did some crying child basically wander out of his basement into the arms of a cop or something?

An incredibly pissed off mother who insisted that the cops listen to her daughter and other victims.

I assume that you meant the Palm Beach arrest and not the much earlier financial shenanigans.

Ooooooo....the 'boys' long, long weekend without escorts all over Asia' sounds like it would have been interesting. Bill and Jeff, doing charitable work for kids and orphans and whatnot. That sounds....like something.

I have a velvelettes earworm now. There are worse earworms to have. It could be some time before I reach for the palate cleansing "Suicide is painless" by johnny mandel.

Though I am slightly freaked out that when I typed "He" into youtube it immediately came up with what I was looking for.

Gawker's original story on the flight logs is instructive, and also includes an active link to the raw data (which is handwritten and hard to read).

Bill Clinton took repeated trips on the " Lolita Express"—the private passenger jet owned by billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein—with an actress in softcore porn movies whose name appears in Epstein's address book under an entry for "massages," according to flight logbooks obtained by Gawker and published today for the first time. The logs also show that Clinton shared more than a dozen flights with a woman who federal prosecutors believe procured underage girls to sexually service Epstein and his friends and acted as a "potential co-conspirator" in his crimes.

Here's another that links Clinton and Epstein. So much of this appears exaggerated or fake but who knows.

"Pedophile Billionaire's Sex Jet" sounds a bit sensationalist until you scratch the surface and realize he might only be a multi-millionaire. But other than that...

In one of the pieces - and I've read so many that I can't even be bothered trying to find it - Epstein says "they weren't 'children', they were tweens and teens'. Nice that he can see the shading. Tweens are, like, 11 and 12.

                                                    I concur 100%.
The basic point is that the reluctance to judge sexual preferences and fetishes (and blurring the distinction between the two concepts) in the name of sexual liberation created a space for Epstein types to flourish.
Not sure if I agree with this, Paedophilia and men procuring underage girls for sex (I'll suspend comment on the overage prostitutes for now) precedes the sexual liberation movement of the 60's by a few thousand years.
