Name a dish you haven't had in ages that you suddenly crave ...

...as a result of being asked to name it.

I was musing earlier about how I've fallen into a bit of a rut of eating similar things week in week out and realised I haven't eaten crispy duck pancakes since Chinese new year (February?) despite them being among my top ten things to eat. My local takeaway's getting a call later.

For the last couple of days I've had a terrible craving for a Yorkshire Subway from Porky Pig in Manchester. It's not actually called a Yorkshire Subway, but it is a Yorkshire pudding, meat, veg, gravy folded over like a sub. And it's gorgeous.

Penne alla gorgonzola, washed down with an Erdinger dunkel, at Trattoria Toscana round the corner.

Gluten-intolerance prevents me from ever having it again, though.

I made corned-beef hash the other week (corned beef is hard to find around my way). Rather tasty it was too.

I really wish I could name a gourmet and/or exotic dish, but what I have been craving the last few days has been deep fried chicken, with skin on....essentially KFC. I even bought some thighs with skin on to do in my halogen oven (crisp the skin perfectly, drains water and fat at the bottom and the flesh remains moist - can't praise enough that gizmo) then I checked the calories...sigh....

Particularly if you pronounce it the way it should be pronounced, rather than how Germans pronounce it. They don''t know what you're on about.

Incredible gear, these. They do a Yorkshire Pudding pizza now too.

Does that mean it has a Yorkshire Pudding base? Or a Yorkshire Pudding topping? Or both?

I've never seen it in New York. Nor the Osaka version now that I think about it,

When I lived in China, my city had one Yunnanese restaurant (the province nearest to Thailand). I was taken there once and my host ordered some amazing vegetarian dishes from the menu, which unfortunately I didn't learn the names of. After that point, me and my friends would go back there once a month or so and attempt to describe the dishes, and we were usually successful. We used to order: a sheep's milk mashed potato dish with chillies, wild mushroom pancakes in a yellow pastry with a sort of curry gravy, and fresh crudités with a delicious dip (this last one was especially good because most places in China don't serve fresh, raw vegetables, everything gets stir fried, so we really craved them). Most other Chinese food I can get in the UK if I have a craving, even if it means going to a specialist restaurant in London. But I have no idea how to even begin getting these specific dishes.

I had a jam doughnut today - cakes for someone's birthday at the office.

By Christ, I'd forgotten how sinfully delicious they are.

Ah, the dish that Heinz reintroduced to Lancashire as sausage and baked beans in the same can. It's the latter they'd demand on holiday in Benidorm ...

I'd never put it as my favourite food but cheese on toast. There was an advert on the tv about someone having cheese on toast, someone else seeing them having it and instantly making and eating cheese on toast, someone else seeing them having it and instantly making and eating cheese on toast, someone else seeing them having it and instantly making and eating cheese on toast etc. etc. This is what it is like for me and, I suspect, many others. I just have to see one or think of one and I want one. It is only the fact that I have last night's curry to eat tonight that is stopping me from having one now.

Toast. I'm currrently two days into the Refugee Ration Challenge, and I'm possibly hallucinating about toasted bread, with butter and Marmite.

                                            Details of the challenge below:

Cheese on toast doesn't really seem to exist in the American consciousness. It's very odd, given how much America likes white bread and melty cheese. But if you talk about it here, everyone thinks you mean a "grilled cheese" which ironically isn't grilled and is more like a cheese toastie.

Well, that just raises all of the different culinary meanings of "grill" (as discussed previously).

A "grilled cheese" is often prepared on a griddle, but would almost never be done in what we call a "broiler".

The fact that a grilled cheese is fried would confuse my fellow countrymen, I think. And even if they think they're translating from American to English, they'd think a "Grill" is what they'd call a barbecue; and while the idea of a barbecued cheese sandwich is appealing, it's not what you'd get.
