Walmington on Sea is near - fictionally, of course . Eastbourne, which for much of the 20th century was a solid Tory seat. Recently it's become more marginal but that didn't stop 57% of its voters plumping for leave in the referendum. So it wouldn't be surprising that the majority of the Dad's Army characters would be that way inclined. That said, I'm not sure that petty national interests nor irrational hatred of foreigners -ignorance and distrust, perhaps? - would have been as sadly evident as it is today across much of the political divide, but am glad to be corrected on this by more astute modern historians than me.

It's an interesting exercise, guessing which way fictional characters would have voted. How about Steptoe and son? I can see some right old rows going on in that house over the issue. Alf Garnett I think we can put down as a leave and how about Bob and Terry in The Likely Lads? Bob a leave for sure, but as for Terry?

well the dad's army characters would mostly have been in their 130's and 140's at the time of the referendum, so it's not clear what way they would have voted.
