I've read these two excellent books on Chechnya, Sebastian Smith 'Allah's Mountains' and 'In Chechnya: A Small Victorious War' by Carlotta Gall and Thomas de Waal.

Is the Tony Wood book recommended?

Carlotta Gall is a classmate of mine. An interesting and intelligent woman whose work I have always admired.

I only know of her from this book, what else would you recommend?

I've read two very different accounts of the conflict in Chechnya, both illuminating in their own way but neither leaves you with a particularly warm feeling.

The Oath: A surgeon under fire by Khassan Baiev, and
One soldier's war in Chechnya by Arkady Babchenko

AE, she's now the Istanbul bureau chief of the New York Times.

              Here are some recent pieces.

She's also written a book about the US In Afghanistan called The Wrong Enemy that argues that the more serious problem is Pakistan and the ISI.

Thanks UA. I think I might have heard of that book.
