I don't want to put words in his mouth, so this is just what I understood - I believe Jeremy was closer to McDonnell than Corbyn, but very respectful and admiring of both. He was certainly hugely proud of Corbyn becoming leader, delighted by the popular response, and found it initially difficult to reconcile that with his obligations to satirise them.

Actually, your last statement is a much better explanation of how he was rather than embarrassment.

His book about his family tree is super funny but also warm and often profound. He mourns the loss of Humphrey Lyttleton in it IIRC so there's a double sadness to this news. Hardy's Guardian tribute to Humph (appended to George Melly's main piece) is applicable to him:

This is terrible news. My heart always sank if he wasn't on The News Quiz. By streets the funniest man on Radio 4. His escalating, gentle rants were real moments of joy.
