Actually, your last statement is a much better explanation of how he was rather than embarrassment.

I never warmed to Hardy for some reason.

I don't think I've ever seen somebody spoken of as warmly as him today.

You know what? This is fucking awful.

RIP Jeremy. Thank you for the laughs, and the education.

Really shocked and saddened by this. I had missed him on The News Quiz this series but didn't know he was unwell.

His book about his family tree is super funny but also warm and often profound. He mourns the loss of Humphrey Lyttleton in it IIRC so there's a double sadness to this news. Hardy's Guardian tribute to Humph (appended to George Melly's main piece) is applicable to him:

This is terrible news. My heart always sank if he wasn't on The News Quiz. By streets the funniest man on Radio 4. His escalating, gentle rants were real moments of joy.

                  This one really hurts.

Lovely tribute to him on this week's News Quiz and, as chance would have it, a mention of Linda Smith who, incredibly died 13 years ago whose death also affected me in a similar way.

Thirteen years since Linda Smith died, seriously? Mind you, it is now 23 years since Willie Rushton passed away

Just learned about this documentary in which Jeremy Hardy goes to Palestine with the ISM. This was about 9 months before I was there, so rings a lot of bells.

I guess putting two and two together, Lucy, this connects with the cancer- bastard thread. Must have been very painful for you. You've done him proud here.
